The Transition to Renewables
We are living in a time of change. The age of fossil fuels will pass in our lifetimes.
In recent years the new generations of solar heating, photovoltaic’s, wind power and biomass sources have become commercially viable for golf businesses.
Certain renewable energies have been harnessed for many years, particularly traditional biomass materials, hydroelectricity and geothermal power. New generations of solar heating, photovoltaics, wind power and biomass sources have become commercially viable, slowly assuming a more prominent position in society's energy mix. Research and development is currently focussed on the roll-out of new energy sources including ocean energy (wave and tidal), gasification and the commercialisation of second generation biofuels.
Golf has the opportunity to diversify its energy sources to begin the move away from fossil-fuels. The time is now.
The new horizon
Transition to a greener energy strategy at your golf facility:
- Switch to a ‘green’ tariff - a grid supply based on renewable energy
- Transition buggies and service vehicles to electric or hybrid-electric
- Install geothermal heating and cooling systems
- Assess the viability of small scale wind, solar and photovoltaic installations
- Install a combined heat and power boiler
- Install a voltage optimiser to reduce energy consumption
Combined with energy efficiency measures covering equipment, light fittings, motion sensors, insulation and ventilation, as well as staff and customer education, golf facilities can switch to renewable energy and potentially even become net 'energy exporters'.
Learn how GEO Certified™ golf clubs are playing their part to enhance landscapes and ecosystems:
The Castle Course
The Castle clubhouse encorporates the use of geothermal energy where 10 boreholes draw water and ground source heat pumps accurately control the heating & cooling needs of the building. The Heat Pump system supplies underfloor heating throughout the clubhouse and strategically positioned fan coils control a stable and comfortable environment.
