Viborg GK is located in a hilly moraine landscape with grassland and deciduous forests. Constant improvements of the landscape and nature are carried out. The area has been inhabited for thousands of years and has a cultural heritage of national significance. Water for irrigation comes from the clubs own drilling and waste water from maintenance is being re-used. Water for irrigation has been reduced by 60% since 1996. 27 holes have old pushup-greens and 9 holes have USGA-standard greens. Fertilizer and pesticide are only used when needed and since 1996 the facility has reduced the consumption by 40% respectively 70%. Waste is taking care of in a proper way and recycling and reusing is conducted. 3 of 4 of suggestions in an energy audit have been launched. Carbon footprints are being...

Nature
Viborg Golf Course is located east of Viborg on Sønderhede in a hilly moraine landscape close to the edge of the last ice age’s glacial line at a level ranging from 22 to 50 m above sea level. The area is on three sides surrounded by distinctive river valleys formed during the last ice age. North-westerly at a distance of approximately 1 km a valley including the lakes of Viborg is located - to the southwest at a distance of about ½ km lays the river valley where Søndermøller Å (Mølleå) which drains the lakes near Viborg, is located. To the east at a distance no more than ½ km the Nørreådal runs which extends in an easterly direction. At the course there are several places with magnificent sights of the river valley.
The landscape is former agricultural land with fields in the cultivable land and forests and small groves on the more sloping land. Much was formerly covered with moor according to maps from 1842 to 1899. Some of these areas are either transformed to forest or has been planted which can be seen on maps from 1928 – 1940. The land is now covered with forests of different nature with mainly oak and an undergrowth of bushes like honeysuckle.
The soil consists of sandy clay. Hollows bogs are formed which has previously been either cultivated or used for peat cutting which can be seen on old maps. Today a number of lakes are established either by trenching or by damming and regulation of water.

Description
Reduction in the use of fertilizers and pesticides
Since 1996 we have worked determined to reduce the consumption of fertilizers, pesticides and water. This work has resulted in a reduction in consumption of pesticides by more than 80%,fertilizer by about 50% and water for irrigation by 60%.
Fixate the water level in a lake
In 2002 we got the permission to set up an overflow to fixate the water level in the lake near hole 8. This has improved the conditions for fish and birds in the lakes significantly.
Establishment of plantations using local species.
In collaboration with the municipality of Viborg we have established a plan for maintenance of the planting in and around the golf course. We only use only native species and removes species which are not resident in the area.
We have put up 150 bird boxes
In the period from 1999 to 2001, we mounted 150 nesting boxes. Unfortunately we haven’t seen many birds in the boxes perhaps because of an incorrect designed. We consider mounting new boxes with a new design in the near.

Landscape & Heritage
Before the construction of the newest 9 holes in 2005 major archaeological investigations were conducted prior to the tender and start of the construction work. We were well aware that there are a very large number of findings particularly from the Bronze Age. That was confirmed by the studies. It was therefore a requirement when constructing the holes that works could not be carried out under the plough layer.
A number of important findings from the Bronze Age and early Iron Age have been found in and around the course. The area is therefore of great importance to national and even international level.
Viborg Stift Museum (the museum in Viborg) has praised Viborg Golf Club for their cooperation when constructing the new holes in 2005.

Water
We use public water in the clubhouse and for drinking water on the course. Water for irrigation comes from our own groundwater drilling. We have installed a fully modern and automatic irrigation system and we only irrigate at night. We irrigate only greens and tees and only when needed. We are constantly trying to reduce the water consumption and we have managed to reduce water for irrigation in 2008 to 60% of our consumption in 1996.

Aims & Objectives
Viborg Golfklub has the following key objectives for conserving water quality and minimizing water consumption:
Turf
The full size course have 18 holes established in the period 1976 to 1990. Greens on these holes and on the 9 holes on the pay and play-course are structured as pushup-greens and the grass on these greens have very short roots. Several times each year we sow with browntop bent and fescue but there is still some poa annua in these greens.
The 9 new holes are constructed with greens according to USGA standards and on these greens grass consists primarily of brown top bent and fescue. Grass on tees have the same composition of grass as grass on greens. Grass on fairways are naturally occurring varieties. We sow greens, tees and fairways with brown top bent and fescue several times each year to reduce consumption of water, fertilizers and pesticides.

Nutrition
We feed greens, fairways and tees when needed. This means that we feed depending on weather conditions including the amount of rainwater. We take soilsamples of greens each year for analysis for fertilizers and adjust the amount of feed according to the results of the analysis. We sow several times each year with Fescue and Browntop Bent to reduce the consumption of fertilizers. We have succeeded in reducing the consumption of fertilizer in 2008 to around 40% of the consumption in 1996.

Pest & Disease Control
There are very strict rules in relation to which kind of pesticides can be used on Danish golf courses. In most cases this gives us little or no choice. If possible we try to use the most effective pesticides and types with low hazard classification.
We have tried using a number of biological agents and agents that should increase the resistance of grass. Unfortunately these agents have not proven effective in our course which is why we do not use them anymore.
We have participated in tests concerning maintenance of fairways without use of pesticides. The conclusion of these tests was that healthy grass was the most effective means for reducing weed on fairways. In addition, experiments showed that some mechanical methods could reduce the amount of weeds. We acquired a groomer and we use it regularly and try to have healthy grass.
We have sowed clover with ultra small leaves on some of our fairways. The aim is to reduce the consumption of fertilizers and to introduce a rival to weed. The conclusion is that clover can be used on some locations but not in general.
Formålet er at

Description
Reduced consumption of pesticides
We only use pesticides when nesseary and only after an assessment have revealed that it is the only possibility.
Aims & Objectives
Viborg Golfklub has the following key objectives for achieving high quality playing surfaces in an environmentally responsible manner:
Our management plan include a number of activities to reduce the amout of pesticides used on the course
Waste
We comply with local regulations for waste handling which should result in optimal handling and minimal environmental impact from waste generated on the golf course. As a routine we always consider how to handle waste most correctly.
We have established a new maintenance facility and we have renovated the drainage system for sewage. Sewage water passes a septic tank and is afterwards infiltrated. In addition we have established a new washing area for washing machines. The water from this area passes through an oil sampler and is reused for irrigation part of the golf course.

Energy
We have new and modern machinery which primarily run on diesel. We assume therefore that we use as little fuel as possible with our current level of care. We assume that our main energy consumption (electricity) is due to irrigation. Since we have established the new 9 holes we can see a slight decrease in energy consumption although we use more water for irrigation. The reason for that is that we simultaneously fitted modern and energy-saving pumps. We are replacing most light bulbs to energy saving bulbs.
We have had the Energicentret (Energy Center Viborg) to review the clubhouse and implement actions with a payback time of less than 3 years.

Legislative commitment includes an assessment of the chemicals found on the workplace and to set up guidelines for how accidents are prevented and what should happen if an accident were to occur. Viborg Golf Club has made such an assessment of the workplace and all relevant chemicals including pesticides. This assessment is evaluated by the relevant authority and found to comply with the law. Viborg Golf Club has made appropriate efforts to prevent incidents and have a readiness in case of accident. There has not been an accident which has made it necessary to do a statutory reporting.
