About this Report

This On Course™ Report indicates the commitment of St Andrews New & Jubilee Courses to become a GEO Certified facility by January 20th 2013

It has been automatically generated from data submitted to the Golf Environment Organization by St Andrews New & Jubilee Courses. Publication of this data is the first step towards becoming a GEO Certified facility.

To achieve full certification St Andrews New & Jubilee Courses will be required to submit further detailed data and be assessed by a GEO Accredited Verifier against the GEO Certification Criteria. You can download the criteria from this page.

Each section in this report covers a key area of environmentally sound facility management. As defined by the Golf Environment Organization, these are: Nature, Landscape & Heritage, Water, Turf, Waste, Energy, Education & Awareness and Management Planning.

Nature

Being closest to the sea, the Jubilee course has an extensive duneland system running through the spine of the course. Natural dune grasses flourish in these areas. We also have a SSSI out at the far end of the golf course, with a growing primary dune system. We border the Eden Estuary, which contains numerous species of seabirds. Gorse habitat, and open areas of wispy grassland are extensive to the Jubilee and New courses supporting species such as skylark, brown hare, grey partridge, kestrel, various invertebrates and mammals.

Yellowhammer, linnet, willow warbler and various finches have been recorded. Bare sand areas are maintained to help accelerate nutrient leaching where gorse was removed and grassland encouraged. These bare areas are important for mining bees, wasps and for basking amphibians. As both courses are of very similar gorse/grassland mosaic habitats, the species recorded are also incredibly similar.

Water

We have a state of the art irrigation system, with the capability of providing irrigation water to greens, surrounds, tees and fairways. We, however try and minimise it's use and promote, dry firm links conditions. We supplement any irrigation applied by handwatering dry spots, and the use of wetting agents.

We also use the irrigation system to washdown machinery, and to fill sprayers out on the course.

Finally, the maintenance facility uses water for toilets, washing areas and the canteen area.

Minimise feed and water

Waste

On the courses we compost all our grass clippings with shredded gorse material. All waste from construction jobs is stockpiled at our screening area and allowed to rot down into rootzone for future jobs. Waste water from washing down our machinery is put through two reed beds before being discharged to a sump. Paper, plastic and cans from the courses are placed into recycling bins.

Activities

St Andrews New & Jubilee Courses undertakes the following activities to reduce resource consumption or minimise waste:

email instead of paper

  • Encourage staff to use email rather than send paper copies of documents. Also encouage staff to carry out double sided printing on all non essential papers.

Spot spray for weeds

  • If possible we try to spot spray for weeds as much as practical, especially on greens, surrounds and tees thereby minimising the amount of water used.

Composting green waste - grass/gorse.

  • We collect all grass clippings from greens, tees and fairways. Once a year we would also collect clippings from areas of rough that are cut back. This is mixed with gorse, which through the winter is cut back, shredded and stored to produce a compost

Create a reed bed washdown facility.

  • In 2009 we build a wash down facitily where the water drains through two reedbeds before going to a soakaway which is well away from any water course. The water from the outfall can be monitored.

Use of wetting agents

  • We are increasing using wetting agents to reduce water usage on playing areas, especially greens. we also try to hand water as much as practical to ensure the water is going where is is most intended.

turves/cores/soil

  • if any area of the golf course is being altered, any soil, sand, turf, cores, leaves etc is taken to a central area and stored until it breaks down. This is then screened and usually mixed with sand before being used in repair or construction work.

reuse old gabion stones

  • over the past two winters we had had to replace/repair the gabions along the edge of the golf course. we have always reused the stones from the old baskets when filling the new ones thereby reducing the requirement to purchase so much new stone.

Energy

The policy for energy consumption is to efficiently control electricity use and strive to reduce fuel consumption wherever possible. Electric vehicles are used where possible and diesel fuel rather than petrol. All petrol consumption is strictly monitored and recorded as required under current legislation.

Light sensors have been used as much as practically possible in non-public areas such as Staff Canteen with energy saving light bulbs installed throughout the building to conserve as much energy as possible.

  • Electricity - 445834 Kwh
