Golf course Wijderwormer is the homecourse of The Zaanse Golfclub.
The course is about 53 ha and provides 18 holes and practice facilities. The location below sea level is characteristic for this part of the Dutch landscape. The integration of the golf course in the landscape is good and therefore a contribution to nature and landscape. The golf course is of great value for nature conservation, because of the large number of bird- and plant species.

Nature

The "Zaanse Golf Club" is a flourishing club with a beautifull course in the caracteristic watery polder landscape in Wijdewormer. The first nine holes were constructed in 1989, the second nine in 2007. The course and the environment have an open caracter and lies in a polder next to a peat bog area.
The surface is wet and lies roughly 4 meters below sea level.
The first nine holes are build around a socalled "wheel", a lake caused by the collapse of the dike in 1825, with a dept of 40 meters in the middle. From 1953 till 1988 the lake was partly used as swimming pool.
The growth is typical for this area. That means reed borders, elders, birches and willows. The architect insisted to save these specific qualities. The most to this landscape belonging animals do occur like water- and meadowbirds, swallows, buzzards, kestrels, diffirent gulls, dragonflies and other insects, butterflies, diifirent amphibians and mice and hares.

  • We try to create a habitat for grass snakes.

Landscape & Heritage

The polder, where the Zaanse Golf Club is situated, is dried in 1626. Before that moment the lake was part of the Ymere and directly connected with the North Sea. A polder nearby. the Beemster, is appointed to be World Heritage.

Aims & Objectives

Zaanse Golf Club has the following key objectives for conserving or enhancing its landscape and cultural heritage value:

  • The aims for conserving the landscape and cultural heritage are part of the manangement plan

Water

Water is always abundant at the Zaanse Golf Club. In 1626 dikes were constructed around the then existing lake "Wijdewormer". With 13 huge watermills the polder was dried and made ready for the farmers. Nevertheless there were burstings of the dikes in 1665, 1669, 1717, 1756 and 1825 when the now existing lake was formed
With this lake we have a main source for the irregation system of the course. Anyway our irregation program is tailored to meet the criteria which lead to greater allround consistency and health for the turfgrass.
Water for the clubhouse is delivered by the regional water company (PWN).

Irrigation

The following areas are irrigated:

Area name Approx. Hectarage
Greens 1 ha
Tees 1 ha
Fairways 12 ha
driving range 3 ha

Zaanse Golf Club irrigation system is Fully computer controlled.

This irrigation system is serviced every 6 months.

This irrigation system is upgraded every 2 years.

This irrigation system is calibrated every 4 years.

Our greenkeeping staff incorporate evapotranspiration rates and weather data into their irrigation programme:

With the local weatherforecast every day we also get data of the expected evatranspiration rates so we can import that in the irregation programme.

Zaanse Golf Club monitors soil water content to minimise irrigation and improve turf quality.

Analysis

Zaanse Golf Club undertakes environmental monitoring of water quality.

The key findings of these tests were:

The water in the lakes and the ditches is a little bit salty caused by a migration of salt water in the deeper layers of the ground, about 30 to 40 meters below sea level, to the deep lake. During the years this salt transport is minimizing.

Activities

Zaanse Golf Club has undertaken the following activities to conserve / reduce / minimise water consumption:

  • Minimise irrigated area
  • Irrigate in the evenings
  • De-compact the soil
  • Grass species selection
  • Regular inspections for irrigation system leaks
  • Soil moisture analysis
  • Gathering of evapotranspiration data

Zaanse Golf Club undertakes the following activities to protect and enhance water quality:

  • Maintain vegetative buffers
  • Creation of swales and attenuation areas
  • No spray zones
  • Erosion control
  • Pest and disease tolerant grass selection
  • Informed selection of fertiliser type
  • Informed selection of pesticides (least toxic, least persistent)
  • Naturalisation of pond margins to improve oxygenation

Aims & Objectives

Zaanse Golf Club has the following key objectives for conserving water quality and minimizing water consumption:

  • To minimize the waterconsumption we installed a Waste2water plant for cleaning the equipment without spilling potable water.

Turf

The grass selection is made together with Barenbrug Holland BV and is based on a low nutrician level, good sickness resistance, relatively high salt tolerance and a low water need. The rough grass selection is mixed with a flora mixture.

Zaanse Golf Club maintains the following turfgrass species:

Nutrition

The grass selection was made with a low nutrician level, so on a yearly basis for the greens is given respectively NPK a hectare : 170, 40 en 174; for the fairways : 40, 10 en 20 and for the tees : 164, 30 en 162.
