About this Report

Publication of this Certification Report indicates that Forsgårdens Golfklubb has been assessed against the GEO Certification Criteria and awarded GEO Certified status.

Each section of this document covers a key area of environmentally sound golf facility management. As defined by the Golf Environment Organization, these are: Nature, Landscape & Heritage, Water, Turf, Waste, Energy, Education & Awareness and Management Planning.

Nature

The site is surronded by the city of Kungsbacka on three sides. There is, despite this urbanized location a large variety of natural values. The most important are: A small river- Söderå- running in the north along and across the site- length of 2300 m with an open water surface of 10-15000 m2; 7 ponds, separate or part of the river, total surface 3-5000 m2; Ditches- total length 2500 m; Group of trees and scrubs approxi. 1,5 ha; 80 sandbunkers; Grassland 25-30 ha; Edges of forests 5000 m; Fences and mounds of stone.

Golfbanan omges i syd, väst och norr av Kba. Trots detta finns många naturvärden: Söderå som utgör del av banans norra gräns och delvis rinner genom banan, tot längd ca 2300m med en öppen vattenyta på 10-15000 m2; Sju dammar med tot yta 3-5000m2; Diken 2500m; Träddungar och buskområden ca 1,5 ha; 80 sandbunkrar; Oklippta gräsytor 25-30 ha; Skogsbryn ca 5000m; Stengärdsgårdar/rösen

Activities

Forsgårdens Golfklubb has undertaken the following activities to enhance nature protection:

Nestingboxes (35) and duck-house	Yearly inspection in march-april and cleaning of all nestingboxes. The duck house is removed from its host pond, cleaned and stored indoor during the winterseason.
Keep water features open by reedcutting	Cutting of reed with special reed harvesting boat, and removing the cut material manually
Two pilotareas for enhanced biodiversity	Raking in April, prehay-making in june and hay-making in july using scythes ,and when dried removing the hay. After the seasong evaluation of the result that gives input to the next years care program. It is important that no fertilier is added!
Carefull clearing of edges of forests and scrubs	Cutting and clearing in a carefully way to obtain a good balance between "openess" (air and light) and shelter for wildlife

Aims & Objectives

Forsgårdens Golfklubb has the following key objectives for maximizing its ecological value:

• Incease our knowledge about how to enhance biodiversity with focus on fauna
• Further develop the 2 pilot areas for enhanced biodiversity
• Promote clubmembers to sponsor and take ownership of nesting boxes and other activities

Landscape & Heritage

The site serves as an harmonic transit heritage preserving area between the city of Kungsbacka running south, west and north and the agricultural and woodland in the east. There are 11 ancient remains, stonefences (850 m), mounds of stone, old roads, paths and ditches.

Stay in contact with and consult the local NHB if needed	We have made a preliminary inventory of objects of cultural value, like ditches, old roads and paths, fences and mounds of stones, etc. The quality of this inventory will be improved when the new digital map of the course is available.

Water

The small river running along and across the site is the natural source of water for irrigation. The river is also the natural recipient for surfacewater. The clubhouse and the sanyary facilities for guests and the employees use water from the local utilities.

Vatten till bevattningssystemet pumpas från Söderå, som genom sin utsträckning utmed och delvis igenom banan är den huvudsakliga recipienten för banans ytvatten. Vatten till klubbhus, banservice, kiosk och gästtoa kommer från det kommunala vattensystemet.

The key findings of these tests were:

Monitoring of waterquality is limited to the river. Sampling takes place yearly at 3 points; inflow,outflow and in between. The following parameters are monitored: pH, alcaline, conductivity, hardness, phosphate, nitrite, nitrate and colour. Due to inflow from the surrounding agricultural and housing areas it is not possible to identify potential contribution from the golfcourse.

Turf

The site was developed in the the 80´s using state of art grass (mainly creeping bent) at that time. Since then the migration of poa, auna and other grasses, in combination with turfing and rebuilding using new grass species have contributed to the present variety of grasses. The strategy for culturing practices is mechanical treatment and dressing and minimize the use of pesticides and fertiliser and irrigation.

När banan byggdes på 80 talet användes state of art gräs ( fescue) vid denna tid. Under de gångna åren fram till i dag har gräset blivit uppblandat med invandrande arter, tex poa och auna, vilket i kombination med torvning och ombyggnader med nyare gräsarter medfört att banan i dag har en blandad grässammansättning.Huvudstrategin för grönyteskötsel är luftning och dressning och minimal användning av bekämpningsmedel, gödsel och bevattning.

Pest & Disease Control

Fairways are sprayed every second or third year for control of leaf-shaped weeds. On greens, surroundings, approaches and tees samples are taken and analysed by an independant laboratory to get the correct diagnosis and correct treatment. Application is made using a spraying machine eqipped with shirts to prevent overspraying.

Waste

In the first quarter of 2009 the entire waste handling practice was reviewed in cooperation with Renova, a major wastehandling and recycling contractor. As a result a new fully fledged wastehandling agreement was signed i March 2009. The agreement includes training of personnel, improved and more informative signposts, improved arrangement of wastecontainers. For the present our waste is classified as Combustible 8 tons p year, non combustible 1,5 tons, recycled like paper 3m3, glass, metallics, various hazardeous material 0,3 tons p year. We have also containers for bottles and cans withpaid deposits. The matrix below is too specific and it is not realistic to report according to this scheme.

Under 1a kvartalet 2009 gick vi tillsammans med Renova, igenom hur de olika avfallsströmmarna hanterades. Revisionen resulterade i ett nytt avtal som täcker alla avfallsströmmar exkl avfall från kök (sep avtal direkt mellan kök och entreprenör). Det nya avtalet inkluderar förutom kvittblivning utbildning, instruktioner och skyltning, nya mer ändamålsenliga behållare, vi har fn följande fraktioner/ årliga mängder: Brännbart 8 ton, icke brännbart 1,5 ton, återvunnet papper ca 3 m3, glas, metall och pantbara förpackningar från banan ca 0,5 ton, farligt avfall 0,5 ton.

Activities

Forsgårdens Golfklubb undertakes the following activities to reduce resource consumption or minimise waste:

New agreement 2009-2011 with Renova

• Based on 2 years of cooperation with a contractor we reviewed the handling of all the waste streams and signed a new three year contract incuding: better definition of fractions; better labelling and signplates; education and training of employees.

Frequent follow up of the result

• The experience mentioned above confirms the need to follow up and control the entire waste handling system on a regular basis. We have decided to make several mini audits, sometimes together with the contractor and take corrective action if needed.

Energy

Our energy saving program started 2005/6 when we participated in the SGF/ Fortum Energysaving pilotproject. We focused on electricity, and to get a better understanding of the use of electricity we installed several new electrical meters and meters to measure the use of warmwater in order to obtain a base for decisions and actions. The main user of electricity was and still is the club house including kitchen and restaurant. The old heating and ventilation installation was revamped and a new modern control system was installed. In addition 4 air to air heatpumps were installed in the workshop and in the conferens facilities.

Vårt energisparprogram påbörjades 2005/6 då vi deltog i SGFs/ Fortums pilotprogram. Vi fokuserade främst på elförbrukningen , installerade fler elmätare och varmvattenmätare för att få kontroll på de olika förbrukarna och underlag för åtgärder. Den största elförbrukaren är klubbhuset inkl kök och restaurang. Det befintliga systemet för värme och ventilation renoverades och försågs med ett nytt styr och reglersystem. Två luft-luft värmepumpar installerades i vardera verkstaden och konferensavdelningen

In May 2008 a combined scramble/environmental event took place with 35 participants representing the boards, committées, superintendents and employees of the community clubs.
The event included a three hour workshop led by representatives of SGF. The theme of the workshop was " How to prioritize the environmental work in the clubs"

The env. plan is broken down in subactivities. Each subactivity is delegated to the members of the env. committé and others , e.g the superintendent, the greenkeeping staff, interested members etc.
The progress is reviewed at the env. committé meetings in average every second month , and the detailed plan adjusted accordingly.
The over all progress is reported to the board, sometimes together with requests for funding!
