Amsterdamse Golf Club
The history of this golf course dates back to 1934 when the Amsterdam Golf Club had a course on the southeastern edge of town. However, this course had to be relocated due to the construction of a railway. The new location was an arable plot of 150 acres in the Houtrak Polder, just west of Amsterdam, which was in use by the AGC since 1990. The Houtrak Polder was created after drainage of the IJ (bay) in 1873 and was very suitable for agriculture because of its fertile clay. Today, the course has the character of a parkland course with plenty of open water and fine sight lines. The course is...

Landscape & Ecosystems
The Golf course of the Amsterdamse Golf Club was developed in the eighties on the clay soil of the then called Buiten IJ and has been completed over the years as a true park course. Many water ponds, bushes and solitaire trees result in beautiful sceneries throughout he course. All the holes have their specific character and own identity by well placed bunkers, ponds and several sloping areas in the course. Outside the fairways the course is covered by natural rough. Several water ponds have been developed over the years and show to be very suitable for amfibic lifeforms.
The golf course and main buildings are on the Westside from the Baduinlaan while the driving range and car parking area are East from same raod. The total area is 59 ha.
-------------------

Amsterdamse Golf Club is undertaking the following activities to improve the quality of habitats on the golf course:
| Creation of botanically rich rough grassland | In several mounds and areas outside the fairways and mowed (semi-)rough we are working on altering the topsoil and vegetation by adding a thick layer of sand (2 inches) and reseeding with festuca (rough species). |
| Promoting species and structually diverse woodlands |
Until last year (2010) all grasslands were sprayed (MCPA, Primstar) against weeds, etc. At the start of this year we only sprayed the fairways, tees and greens. In all other areas weeds removal is on a selective base, only by mowing. |
| Maintenance of an appropriate balance of open water and aquatic vegetation |
The ponds and waterways are cleared yearly (partially) to ensure proper drainage of the golf course. One-third of the reeds is removed in wintertime. All this is done in cooperation with the "flora en fauna commissie" |

Water
Water use at the AGC is related to 2 main activities, which are sprinkling of the golf course and domestic use. Regarding the latter domestic tapwater is used for all the buildings, while irrigation through sprinkler heads is done with groundwater, In summer time groundwater is also used for machine cleaning.
The greens and tees are sprinkled regularly. The fairways only in very dry wheather conditions, when needed.
The irrigtion system is fully computerized and optimized as needed and all consumptions are measured.
The domestic water use can be broken down in clubhouse (i.e. showers, kitchen use and sanitary.
machinelstorage room, green keepers room and the office room use water for cleaning, showering and sanitary.
In the house of the caddymaster and the building at hole 10 we use domestic tap water. Furthermore there are 2 water taps on the course

Amsterdamse Golf Club is undertaking the following activities to maximize irrigation efficiency:
| Selection of grass species | We are in the process of reintroducing festuca to fairways, tees and greens to minimize water consumption. Due to our soil conditions this is a slow process. |
| Soil decompaction and thatch management | On a regular basis we are applying techniques to improve the topsoil: vertical mowing, verticutting, slitting, vertidraining, thaych removal. On the greens and tees more often than on the fairways. The procedures and frequencies are described in "Baanbeheerplan" and "Nulmeting". |
| Timing and dose of water application | Fairways are irrigated only in periods of severe lack of precipitation and and after application of fertilizer (when there is no rain). Greens and tees are irrigated during the growing season, taking into account the precipitation. Soil moisture levels are closely measured with a Theta Probe. |
| Analysis of soil moisture | Greens only, done on a weekly basis, using the Theta Probe. |
| Incorporation of evapotranspiration rates and weather data | Are taken into account. |
| Use of wetting agents |
So far only on greens. We use Revolution. |
| Targeting of sprinkler heads |
With the start-up of the system in March all sprinklers are checked for working condition and area covered. During summer this is monitored on a regular basis. |

Energy & Resources
The energy use at the AGC is considerd by our GEO-advisor as "normal" compared to similar golfcourses. Nevertheless, the board of the club as part of the GEO programme decided to set up an "energy committee" which was tasked to work on reduction of the energy use. This committee is a sub-committee of the committee looking after the facilities, i.e "de Gebouwencommissie".
The committee is focussing on the following areas :
- Propane gas is used for heating purposes of facilities and heating the water for showering and use in kitchen.
- Electricity is used for lighting, kitchen equipment and on the course for the irrigation pumps and charging of the batteries of the golfcarts.
- Equipment for maintenance of the course is using diesel and petrol.
All purchased electricity is produced as green energy and 1 of the golf carts is equipped with solar pannels on the roof. Since 2010 the feasability of installing windmills and solar pannels is being investigated with a dutch energy supplier.
