The Domburgsche Golf Club is situated in the unique and beautiful dunes on the south side of Domburg, in the province of Zeeland. The course opened in 1914 and is one of the oldest courses in the Netherlands. The 9-holes golf course is located on 24 hectares and was designed by the architect E.C. Warren. It was renovated in 2000 by golf course architect Alan Rijks. The location is, especially for Dutch standards, very special because of its proximity to the North Sea. A location such as this calls for thorough approach by both green keeping and the course committee. The report, as it was...

Landscape & Ecosystems

The Domburgsche Golf Club is situated in the unique and beautiful dune landscape located on the south side of Domburg, in the province of Zeeland. The location of this 9-holes golf course is unique because of its proximity to the North Sea and inherently contains a high nature value. Field surveys of the territory were conducted of plants, birds, mammals, amphibians, butterflies, dragonflies and damselflies, mushrooms and fish. The terrain can be divided into four types of vegetation: dry dune area, moist dune area, historic vegetation, open water and pools. An extensive environmental management plan has been compiled based on these vegetations and their maintenance. The goal is to maintain as well as to increase the natural diversity of the terrain whenever possible. The inventories are carried out by a GEO commission and take place annually or every two years. Noticeable are the undulations created by about 100 craters from the Second World War which recall a tragic past, but also provide an important microclimate for the flora and fauna.

Hiernaar is uitgebreid onderzoek gedaan.

Domburgsche Golfclub is making the following efforts to manage the playing quality expectations of customers:

Establishing clear internal policies for irrigation, fertilization, colour, cutting heights, overseeding etc The course commission adheres to a course management plan that includes all daily operations, frequencies and goals. The manner of maintenance has been established in a contract. The contractor discusses further planning of details during regular meetings.
Promoting the playing quality values of more naturalized turf, particularly fairways and semi-rough Member support is sought by communicating about both the maintenance issues and the reasoning behind the choices being made. Members also seek direct contact with green-keeping or the commission if concerned about a specific situation like dry areas on the course.
Promoting the financial benefits of presenting sustainable surfaces The choices for the design and maintenance of various elements are transparent and accessible to members. Regular publication via the website or club newsletter addresses issues that have given rise to concern. A request for intensified maintenance is often parried with the financial consequences.
Improving customer understanding around greens maintenance Golfers are informed through various means concerning maintenance activities on the course. Intensive maintenance is also listed on the website or mentioned by phone thereby successfully staving off any unpleasant surprises.
Demonstrating the direct relationship between environmental best practice and year round high quality playing surfaces Sustainable terrain management clearly stimulates to all stakeholders which maintenance measures have been taken and how they are related to the results of good, playable greens and to the limited amount of closures.

Conservation & Enhancement

Domburgsche Golfclub is undertaking the following activities to conserve and enhance landscape character:

Allowing seasonal variation of course colouration and texture Discolouration resulting from drought (to a certain extent) and other factors are seen as an addition to the natural quality of the landscape and the quality of the game.
Appropriately matching mowing lines to contours The mowing lines of the fairways and semi-rough are well tuned in to the undulations and different elements of the terrain.
Protection and restoration of historic features Present historical elements are restored where possible.
Discreet on-course signage and furniture The terrain furniture has been selected with care and is maintained accordingly.
Screening and softening unsightly man-made features Constructions that do not correlate to the landscape are being obscured through vegetation.
Activity Description

Domburgsche Golfclub is undertaking the following activities to improve the landscape ecology of the golf course:

Minimizing the amount of amenity grass The surface intensively mowed grass is kept to a minimum. By determining which elements fall outside the game and which are of importance to the character of the natural landscape, only some elements need to be extensively mowed.
Increasing the size of habitat patches Where possible, management is expanded or natural elements are constructed.
Connection of internal habitat patches The nature management plan is aimed at optimising the biodiversity. A part of this includes connecting plant squares, brushwood and water elements.
Connection of patches with external habitats A keen inventory of natural elements both on the course and in its neighbouring landscape allows for improved management and maintenance. For instance, equal goal setting of natural elements on and outside the course can take place.
Creation of habitat corridors The golf course is part of an ecological main structure. Its goals are known and interwoven with the nature policy of the golf course.
Avoidance of habitat fragmentation Those locations with a high nature value have been indicated in the nature management plan and are being duly protected and maintained.
Improving and diversifying habitat edges Edges of plant squares contain borders and casings.
Activity Description

Domburgsche Golfclub is undertaking the following activities to improve the quality of habitats on the golf course:

Water

Both surface water and groundwater are used for irrigation. There is a preference for surface water, however, because it’s of better quality. The quality of water is monitored annually. The irrigation system is equipped with a frequency regulator that activates the pump only when needed. The course only needs to be irrigated during the summer months as a result of its location in the dune landscape. Furthermore, the irrigation system will be modernised in the coming years. Other measures aimed at minimising consumption include the use of wetting agents on the greens, tees, top edges and bunker edges. Research is currently being conducted into the possible use of a desalination plant.

Energy & Resources

The golf club aims to minimise energy usage and has made various adaptations over the past years to accomplish this. Lamps were replaced by energy-saving lamps and various locations make use of motion sensors. Currently, different investments are being considered aimed at reducing the use of gas, such as the possible purchase of an electrically-driven rough mower. The purchase of a weather station would allow for optimal use of the irrigation system by taking precipitation and other weather conditions into account.

Environmental Quality

Environmental management is carried out in different ways. Waste is separated and removed by external parties for recycling. Used water is drained into the public sewage system. The used water from the hosing-down area is chemically filtered and there is a silt deposit for waste water. Kitchen waste water is collected in a separate grease deposit. Frying fat is collected separately by a specialised sanitation company. Yearly samples are taken to assess the quality of (irrigation) water. This allows for the monitoring of the chemical quality of the water and serves as the basis for the fertilisation plan.
