Golfbaan Landgoed Bleijenbeek
Golf course Bleijenbeek has demonstrated that an environmentally friendly management can be combined with economic activities, and can strengthen each other. The golf course is part of an extensive network of ecosystems and thus functions as a corridor promoting species migration. The clubhouse is self sufficient for its drinking water and all the waste water is purified via a constructed wetlands system. The modern clubhouse is sustainably designed with special attention to energy saving systems. The management also strongly encourages members and greenfee players to separate their waste...

Landscape & Ecosystems
Golf course Bleijenbeek is a part of Estate Bleijenbeek in Afferden, located in the province of Limburg. Designed by Jol Golf Design, the golf course has a natural, park-like character that distinguishes itself from its surroundings by its openness and its water elements with rich shoreline vegetation. Each hole is distinctively designed and they are interwoven with the landscape. The park-like character is shaped by large solitary elements, surprisingly open views and the presence of beautifully accented water elements. The park-like character and the choice of tree types, not typical to the area, are located in the immediate surroundings of the clubhouse. The golf course borders on National Park Maasduinen, a nature area of high value. Its unique location from both a landscape and geomorphological perspective is of great value to the golf terrain in terms of the nature and landscape present there. The flora and fauna have been inventoried since the course’s inception and especially noteworthy is the richness in variety of species found on the terrain. These include the beaver observed in the brook valley and a large amount of forest edge birds.

Water
Originally this area was not marked by open water. During its construction, various small pools were dug that have an important function for water birds, amphibians and fish. The open water in the brook zone is given an extra dimension as a natural habitat for the beaver. The surface water used for irrigation is distributed very effectively due its application through a self-thinking system. This system analyses where and how much precipitation is needed, takes the millimetres of rainfall into account as well as the degree of evaporation. High water pressure allows for the application of large amounts of water in a short period of time which minimises the energy usage of the pump installation. The maximum amount of water usage allowed is 40.000 m3 per year. Yearly usage during the past three years has been around 20.000 m3. Especially noteworthy is the self sufficiency of the clubhouse. Water usage is based on the pumping up and filtering of groundwater. Waste water is filtered and purified before it infiltrates the soil.

Energy & Resources
There is a large difference between the newly constructed clubhouse and the old grain barn used as greenkeepers accommodation. Although the clubhouse was constructed and insulated by using modern means, its energy usage is high due to the use of many lamps, equipment and heating. During the renovation of the greenkeepers accommodation, good insulation and other energy-saving materials will be used. The lighting in the open areas of the clubhouse has been adjusted and now exists mainly of LED lamps. Other parts of the clubhouse will change to LED lamps in the next years. For the standard usage of lighting, etc., a transition will be made to energy-saving lamps and motion sensors instead of using conventional light switches. As a result of increasing producer awareness, it is now possible to purchase equipment with a favourable energy label.

Environmental Quality
Pesticides and fertilisers are applied as needed to the greens, tees and fairways on a yearly basis. The main standpoint in their application is to use them as a rescue measure. The most important objectives in their application are: to obtain a good playable golf course; to minimise their usage; to safely store all chemical substances in an especially designated area.
