Landscape & Ecosystems

Welderen golf course was built in 1995 in the river area located between Arnhem and Nijmegen. The golf course plays an important function as a green zone in a largely agricultural and urbanised area. The rich soil structure is cause for a large amount of plant species. Many insects and birds make use of the foraging, nesting and sheltering places. Approximately 50 bird species have been observed, especially the Yellow Wagtail, Black-tailed Godwit, Long-eared Owl, and the Common Cuckoo. Other species are more common types. In 2008, approximately 150 plant species were inventoried. Red list types include the Salad burnet, Broad-leaved Helleborine, and the American or Canadian Waterweed. A separate inventory of butterflies, dragonflies and damselflies was not made but were included in the inventory of plant species. Amphibians and reptiles have been observed in general types and large quantities. An observation was also made of a common European viper which is quite unique for this area.

Activity Description

Golfbaan Landgoed Welderen is undertaking the following activities to improve the landscape ecology of the golf course:

Minimizing the amount of amenity grass The surface intensively mowed grass is kept to a minimum. By determining which elements fall outside the game and which are of importance to the character of the natural landscape, only some elements need to be extensively mowed.
Increasing the size of habitat patches Where possible, management is expanded or natural elements are constructed.
Connection of internal habitat patches The nature management plan is aimed at optimising the biodiversity. A part of this includes connecting plant squares, brushwood and water elements.
Connection of patches with external habitats A keen inventory of natural elements both on the course and in its neighbouring landscape allows for improved management and maintenance. For instance, equal goal setting of natural elements on and outside the course can take place.
Creation of habitat corridors The golf course is not located in a national natural ecological corridor. However, connection to and continuity with bordering terrain is actively sought after.
Avoidance of habitat fragmentation Those locations with a high nature value have been indicated in the nature management plan and are being duly protected and maintained.
Improving and diversifying habitat edges Edges of plant squares contain borders and casings.

Water

Surface water resulted largely from construction to make the terrain more interesting and to form a solid soil structure in order to elevate the golf terrain. Groundwater has always played an important role in the agricultural architecture of this area in large part due to the influences of the rivers, the Rijn and Waal, on the landscape. A water border consisting of various ponds and pools covers an area of four hectares. Above ground- and underground pipes connect the water elements to each other. A mixture of surface- and groundwater is used for irrigation of the terrain. Groundwater is extracted from the pond nearest to the clubhouse, from where it is further distributed through the irrigation system. Unique is that fertiliser can be injected directly and simultaneously with irrigation. The grass thus receives a liquefied fertiliser that is well-absorbed and one that does not need to be dispersed separately.

Energy & Resources

Yearly energy usage comprises 143.000 kWh. It is used by the accommodations, such as the restaurant, locker rooms, the maintenance facility, etc. The energy usage by the different accommodations is not measured separately. Therefore, an exact overview of energy usage is missing although it can be safely stated that the majority can be accounted for by the clubhouse. The accommodations have only been partially reviewed for possible savings. The coming years will see step-by-step changes of existing lighting sources. In order to research the savings possibilities, usage is being registered and evaluated. The maintenance facility is outdated and hardly meets modern standards. A plan will be created in the next years to renovate the accommodations.

Environmental Quality

Hazardous materials needed by maintenance are kept at a minimum and stocks are kept small in light of environmental risks. Leaching is avoided as much as possible by measuring the right amount of fertiliser needed for grass vitality, which is applied under optimal weather conditions. Surface water quality is monitored annually to assess any deterioration.
