Golfclub Cromstrijen
This relatively new polder course was opened in 1989 and is located 1 km away from Numansdorp and less than 10 km away from the Rotterdam conglomerate. The course is scenically nestled between dikes that tell the story of the reclamation of National Park Hoeksche Waard, an old sea clay polder along the river Hollandsch Diep. The course is 168 acres and consists of an 18-hole course with an A-rating and a 9-hole compact course. The design is by Tom McAuley. After construction, adjustments were made under the guidance of several golf course architects.

Golfclub Cromstrijen is an 18-holes A-status golfcourse, combined with a 9-holes compact course. The golfcourse is located in the polder of the Province of Zuid-Holland, near the village of Numansdorp. The course was constructed by the design of Tom McAuley in 1989.
The area surrounding the course has been used for agricultural activities ever since 1200 AD, because of the nutrient clay soil. This area is designated as a National Park, called the ‘Hoeksche Waard’. It is known for it’s polders with unobstructed views, creeks and dykes. Beside this, the course is located next to two terrains with a Natura 2000 Network (a coherent European ecological network) designation: the ‘Hollands Diep’ and the ‘Haringvliet’. These areas are important breeding areas to many aquatic birds and fish species and offer enough space for alluvial forests and salt marshes.
With this high biodiversity next door, the golfcourse provides resting- and feeding habitats for the species from the Natura 2000 Network areas.
In between the golfcourse and the ‘Hollands Diep’ lies the ‘Westerse Bekade Gorzen’, a natural wetland which is a part of the national ecological network. From inventory takes (2011), it appears that the golf course has a high bio-diversity. The Water Rail and various types of orchids have been found and the area can serve as a resting spot for various types of birds from the neighbouring Natura-2000 areas.
In the nature wood, in which the Water Rail has been found, there are many opportunities for nesting birds. This small area is a natural wood on the golf course. Some rough has been added and there is an owl box. There is a coppiced area with mainly Alder trees where the Marsh Thistle and orchids have been found. The Knotted Willow and Ash trees are still too young to be of much ecological value. The edges of the Alder tree wood are the home of the orchids and the wood itself is a resting point for birds and mammals. The banks are covered in reeds, Water Meadow Grass (or Manna Reed Grass) and Branched Bur-Reed.
The small pools on the course are suitable for frogs. Attention has to be paid so that the edges are not overgrown by reeds.

Golfclub Cromstrijen is een 18-holes golfbaan met A-status, gecombineerd met een 9-holes compact course. Het terrein van de golfclub is gelegen in de polders van de provincie Zuid-Holland nabij Numansdorp. De baan is aangelegd in 1989 naar het ontwerp van Tom McAuley.
Door de voedselrijke klei als ondergrond is het gebied in gebruik geweest als akkerbouwgrond. Het direct omliggende terrein naast de baan heeft het kenmerk nationaal landschap de Hoeksche Waard, wat gekenmerkt wordt door polders met ongekende vergezichten, kronkelende kreken en slingerende dijken. Daarnaast liggen er vlakbij de golfbaan twee Natura2000-gebieden, Het Hollands diep, en het Haringvliet. Deze gebieden zijn een belangrijk broedbiotoop voor watervogels en vissen en bieden de ruimte aan zachthoutooibossen en slikken. Deze hoge biodiversiteit maakt de aanwezige soorten in de Natura2000-gebieden de golfbaan gebruiken als rust- en foerageerplaats. Tussen de golfbaan en het Hollands Diep is de Westerse Bekade Gorzen gelegen, een stuk waternatuurgebied dat behoort tot de Ecologische Hoofdstructuur (EHS).
Uit inventarisaties (2011) blijkt dat de golfbaan een hoge biodiversiteit heeft. De waterral en diverse orchideeënsoorten zijn er aangetroffen en het golfterrein kan dienen als rustplek voor de vogelsoorten uit de aangrenzende Natura-2000 gebieden.
In het natuurbos, waar ook de waterral is waargenomen, liggen veel kansen voor broedvogels. Dit gebiedje is een klein natuurlijk bos op het golfterrein. Het is hier en daar verruigd en er hangt een uilenkast.
Er is een hakhoutbosje met overwegend elzen aanwezig waar kale jonker en orchideeën zijn aangetroffen. De aanwezige knotwilgen en –essen zijn nog te jong om van veel ecologische waarde te zijn. De randen van het elzenhakhoutbosje bieden onderdak aan orchideeën en het bosje zelf is een rustpunt voor vogels en zoogdieren. De oevers zijn vooral begroeid met riet, liesgras en egelskop. De aanwezige kleine poelen op de baan zijn geschikt voor kikkers. Wel moet er op worden gelet dat de randen niet overheerst worden door riet.

In co-operation with STRI (Sports Turf Research Institute) a programme has been carried out since 2002 to improve and optimise the composition of the grass mix. At some locations, the thatch layer is too thick, advice has been given on this and is being followed.

Water
Surface water and ground water are the two different main sources. Tap water is used in the course for the sanitary facilities and the course bar. Ground water is not used on the golf course as source, therefore, a further description of surface water will suffice.
For irrigation, water from the Hollandsch Diep is used, because ground and surface water in general is too salty (has too much saline) to use for the golf play elements. For years, irrigation caused a decline in the quality of the playing elements because of the light-alkaline characteristics (pH 7-8). Because of this, the pH value has been lowered (acidified) by the use of sulphuric acid. Tap water is used in the club house of the golf club Cromstrijen.

Oppervlaktewater en grondwater zijn de twee te onderscheiden hoofdstromen. Leidingwater wordt in de baan gebruikt bij de sanitaire voorzieningen en de baanbar. Grondwater wordt op de golfbaan niet als bron gehanteerd, daarom voldoet een nadere beschrijving van het oppervlaktewater.
Voor beregening wordt gebruik gemaakt van water uit het Hollandsch Diep omdat het grond- en oppervlaktewater over het algemeen te zout is om te gebruiken voor de golfspel elementen. Jaren leidde beregening tot een terugloop van de kwaliteit van spelelementen vanwege de licht basische eigenschappen (pH 7-8). In verband hiermee wordt de pH waarde verlaagd (aangezuurd) met zoutzuur. In het clubhuis van de golfclub Cromstrijen wordt gebruik gemaakt van leidingwater.

In the management and exploitation of a golf club, there are many sources of suppliers. There are suppliers for the catering, where a distribution centre is used as much as possible. Supplies for golf course maintenance are sourced from various suppliers.
For the purchase of these products, the balance between price/quality is taken into consideration as well as useable alternatives. In addition, local purchasing is considered. Another aspect which is taken into consideration, is whether the products are eco-certified.
Soil and sand, necessary for dressing, filling, bunker sand, etc. are purchased with the necessary (soil)certificates (clean soil certificates) which shows that this is a responsible product which does not cause environmental damage. Where possible, bulk packaging is used.

Zo zijn er leveranciers die de catering bevoorraden, hiervoor wordt er zo veel mogelijk gebruik gemaakt van een distributie centrum. Because of the historic agricultural use of the polder, the course has a number of historic features which are maintained and well noticeable. These features include pollard willow trees, coppice forest with alder trees, old pits used for the extraction of clay so the dykes could be constructed, and the dykes themselves which have protected the croplands and pastures for flooding. These elements form the visual features of the golfcourse. De golfbaan beschikt door zijn verleden als polder nog over een aantal historische relicten.
