Golf course Toxandria belongs to one the oldest clubs in the Netherlands. Even though the “walking sand dunes” from the early 20’s of the last century have been covered by vegetation nowadays, the club has been able to maintain the undulating character of this type of landscape. Clearly the club made the right step into the 21st century by restoring parts of the old rather open landscape. Landscape & Ecosystems
The club was established in 1928; 9 holes were constructed under guidance from the bureau of architects: “Colt and Morisson”. The contractor was the company: “Copijn and son” from Groenekan. At the time, the area was 43 hectares. Most of the work of the architects was carried out by Morisson but the hand of the well-known colleague Colt is still clearly recognisable today.
The Golf club Toxandria is a club; the course and buildings are the property of the club and are part of the N.S.W. Estate Toxandria. (N.S.W. : Natuur Schoon Wet 1928). The club has a main committee; the main committe is responsible for policies and daily affairs and is accountable to the members of the club. The total size of the estate Toxandria is over 64 hectares of which 48 hectares are the golf course. The Noord Brabantsche Golf club Toxandria wishes to contribute clearly to the ecological developments in the area with environmentally-technical interventions on and around the golf course.
In 1928 is de vereniging opgericht; er werden 9 hole’s aangelegd o.l.v. het architecten bureau: “Colt en Morisson”. De aannemer was de firma: “Copijn en zoon” uit Groenekan. Het terrein was indertijd 43 hectare groot. De meeste werkzaamheden van het architecten bureau werden uitgevoerd door Morissen maar de hand van de bekende collega Colt is heden ten dagen nog duidelijk te herkennen.
De Golfclub Toxandria is een vereniging; de baan en de opstallen zijn eigendom van de vereniging en maken deel uit van het N.S.W. Landgoed Toxandria. (N.S.W. : Natuur Schoon Wet 1928). De vereniging heeft een bestuur; dat bestuur is verantwoordelijk voor het beleid en de dagelijkse gang van zaken; ze legt hiervoor verantwoording af aan de leden van de vereniging. De totale grootte van het Landgoed Toxandria is ruim 64 hectare waarvan 48 hectare golfbaan. De Noord Brabantsche Golfclub Toxandria wil met alle milieutechnische ingrepen,- in en rond de golfbaan-, een duidelijke bijdrage leveren aan de ecologische ontwikkelingen in deze streek.

In order to attract more species of butterflies, we have created special flowery rough areas with many natural flowers and buddleias, umbellifers and host plants. With regard to the stinging nettle, the advice is only to remove these if it bothers the golfers. Voor het aantrekken van vlindersoorten hebben we speciale bloemrijke ruigtes gecreëerd met vele natuurbloemen en vlinderstruiken, schermbloemen en waardplanten. Wat betreft de brandnetel wordt geadviseerd om deze plant alleen te verwijderen als het de golfers hindert. |

Water
The water supply at Toxandria can be divided into two parts. On the course are three wells that are used for irrigation of the course. In addition, there are three accounts with the water board, Brabant Water, for tap water. Three years ago, a large investment was made for the installation of a new irrigation system. The latest technology is entirely capable of differentiating between the uses of irrigation. The irrigation is only used where necessary and nowhere else.
Some time ago, water samples were taken from the well-pumped irrigation water which appeared to have a high iron content. The water will be re-tested this year and it has been agreed to make a check once every five years. Importantly, the target is to minimise the use of subsoil water.
De watervoorziening op Toxandria is op te delen in tweeën. Er zijn op het terrein drie bronnen die gebruikt worden voor de beregening van de baan, daarnaast zijn er drie accounts bij Brabant Water voor leidingwater. Drie jaar geleden is een forse investering gedaan in een nieuwe beregeningsinstallatie. De nieuwste techniek is in staat de beregening zeer gedifferentieerd te laten verlopen, de beregening wordt alleen daar toegepast waar dat nodig is, elders niet.
Watermonsters van het opgepompte water voor de beregening zijn enige tijd geleden genomen en daaruit bleek dat het water sterk ijzerhoudend is. Dit jaar wordt het water weer onderzocht en de afspraak is nu een controle eenmaal per vijf jaar. Belangrijk is de doelstelling het grondwaterverbruik te minimaliseren.

| Selection of grass species |
Regular investigations are carried out for suitable types of grass for tees, fairways and greens. For the green the objective is to have as much bent grasses as possible instead of meadow grasses. In particular because of the vulnerability to diseases of the meadow grasses. Energy & Resources
The energy facilities at the golf club are gas (4 connections), electricity (2 connections) and fuels (petrol/diesel). In addition, some use in made, in small quantities, of hydraulic oil, propane/butane gas and wood (open fire). When replacing /investing in means of transportation, an inventory list of machines is used. This overview comprises information on make, type, year of purchase and year of replacement.
In 2004, Toxandria received confirmation from the City Council of Gilze/Rijen that they comply with regulation 1.2.1. of the decision Catering-, Sport- and Recreation Establishments Environmental Management.
The items below, when they are replaced, will be selected in such a way as to yield a saving in energy.
- Improve heat-dissipating radiators
- Replace conventional heating boiler by an improved performance/high performance boiler
- Optimise the heating system
- Insulate floor
- Purchase energy-efficient cooling systems.
The themes green current, photo-voltage and/or sun panels are being discussed internally, together with the use of earth exchange heating .The construction of a small wind turbine is not an option for us with regard to its return on investment. The change to the application of LPG and bio-fuel has been considered, but the conversion is very costly. At this moment, when replacing, a transition is being made to the purchase of electric/hybrid vehicles. The use of re-cycled oil is not applicable, the used oil is removed as chemical waste.
De energievoorziening op de golfclub rust op gas (4x aansluitingen), elektriciteit (2x aansluitingen) en brandstoffen (benzine/diesel). Tevens wordt in kleine hoeveelheden gebruik gemaakt van hydraulische olie, propaan-/butaan gas en hout (open haard). Bij vervanging/investering van/in vervoermiddelen en voertuigen wordt gebruik gemaakt van een inventarislijst machinepark. Dit overzicht bevat o.a. informatie over merk, type, jaar van aankoop en jaar van vervanging.
In 2004 heeft Toxandria van de gemeente Gilze/Rijen een bevestiging ontvangen dat zij voldoet aan voorschrift 1.2.1. van het besluit Horeca-, sport- en recreatie inrichtingen Milieubeheer.
Bij eventuele vervanging zullen onderstaande zaken op een zodanige wijze worden aangepast dat deze een energiebesparing kunnen opleveren.

De thema’s groene stroom, fotovoltaïsche en of zonnepanelen staan intern ter discussie tezamen met het gebruik van aardwarmte/wisselaar. De bouw van een kleine windturbine is voor ons geen optie gezien de rentabiliteit. Gekeken is ook naar de toepassing van LPG en van biodiesel/ethanol maar de ombouw is een zeer kostbare operatie. Op dit moment wordt bij vervanging omgeschakeld naar de aanschaf van elektrisch/hybride aangedreven voertuigen. Het gebruik van gerecycleerde olie is niet aan de orde, de gebruikte olie wordt chemisch afgevoerd.

| Installation of low-energy lighting |
One of the most important points for attention is the theme ‘energy saving’ by installation of energy-saving lighting, the use of natural light and use of better insulation. Een van de belangrijkste aandachtspunten hierbij is het thema energiebesparing door o.a. de installatie van energiezuinige verlichting, het gebruik van natuurlijk licht en toepassing van betere isolatie. |

In the case of renovation and/or replacement, the environmental aspect is given the highest priority. There is an internal discussion with regard to a radical re-construction of the golf club storage facility, the greenkeepers home, together with extension and movement of the parking area. At the golf club, thermostats and motion sensors are used as often as possible. Timers linked to equipment are in use at strategic places such as the driving range and the parking area. With staff training, they are educated on the theme ‘energy saving’. There is no specific programme available for the awareness of customers (members). However, members are encouraged in energy-saving behaviour by means of stickers in the dressing rooms. Middels bijscholing van de werknemers worden zij gewezen op het thema energiebesparing. In order to minimise the use of fertilisers and pesticides measures have been taken to match them to the different needs of the grass products. Drought and disease-tolerant grasses are selected, for instance the fairways are seeded with bent grass, on the greens red fescue is used and a finer sort of bent grass. Glass, metal and paper/cardboard are collected separately and removed by the firm, Van Ganzewinkel. The quantities have remained the same for the past two years. The amount of used chemicals and environmental unfriendly products is being cut back by looking for alternatives, for example bio-fuel. Another important issue is the knowledge of greenkeeping about the way to use the products. This is a very important part of keeping the environmental quality in good shape.
The maintenance facility is one of the places where the risks for pollution are the biggest. All the necessary precautions are being taken to prevent environmental damage. The storage, disposal and use of dangerous substances is well taken care of at Toxandria. Analysis of the water and waste water will be added in the coming year.

People & Communities
The golf club Toxandria employs 7 full-time greenkeepers. One head greenkeeper is manager and monitors the agreed programme of work. The programme of work to be carried out is established in consultation with the course commissioner after consultation with an outside advisor. Before and after the advisor’s visits, normally twice a year, a meeting is held with all greenkeepers to discuss the proposed measures. The course commissioner has regular meetings with the head greenkeeper to adjust the programme if there are any problems in the meantime. This can also be done together with the assistant-head greenkeeper.
All greenkeepers hold a valid spray license, have successfully completed, and if necessary refreshed, a sawing course. Much attention is paid to protective clothing. The greenkeepers also hold an Emergency Response Officer’s diploma and are able to operate in accordance with regulations and agreements. They receive this training every two years. They are all able to handle chemical substances and keep to the agreements. Finally, they keep a log from their service lists and work carried out.
De golfvereniging Toxandria heeft 7 full time greenkeepers in dienst. Een hoofdgreenkeeper is leidinggevend en houdt toezicht op het afgesproken werkprogramma. Het werkprogramma wordt vastgesteld na overleg met de baancommissaris na consultatie van de aangetrokken adviseur. Voor en na he het bezoek van de adviseur, normaal 2 x per jaar, wordt er een vergadering belegd met alle greenkeepers om van te voren problemen met het onderhoud te benoemen en achteraf om de voorgestelde maatregelen te bespreken. De baancommissaris heeft erg regelmatig overleg met de hoofdgreenkeeper om bij tussentijdse problemen het programma aan te passen. Dit eventueel in samenspraak met de assistent-hoofdgreenkeeper.
Alle greenkeepers hebben een geldige spuitlicentie, een zaagcursus met succes doorlopen en zo nodig herhaald, veel aandacht is er voor beschermende kleding, tevens hebben de greenkeepers een BHV examen gehaald en kunnen bij calamiteiten volgens regels en afspraken optreden. Ze worden twee jaarlijks hiervoor getraind. Ze zijn allen op de hoogte van omgaan met chemische middelen en houden zich aan de afspraken. Tenslotte houden ze hun dienstlijsten en werkzaamheden bij in een logboek.
