Landscape & Ecosystems

The golf course terrain comprises 75 hectares; 30 hectares account for the technical elements and the other 45 hectares consist of water, natural elements and recreational facilities. The golf course is designed by golf course architect Mr. Alan Rijks. The structure of the landscape played a large role in the development of the design. The landscape is characterised by the transition from a wet, brook valley to higher located windborne sand deposits. The golf course is located on the flanks of the Herfterwetering (leat). The development of diverse natural elements and types of vegetation offer all sorts of opportunities for different animal species. Specifically butterflies, dragonflies, amphibians/reptiles, birds and other small mammals will profit from the natural elements found on the golf course. The landscape of the golf course serves a regional ecological function and the preservation of both its structure and of the ecological connecting areas is of great importance.

Turfgrass

Size and estimated species composition of amenity turfgrass maintained at Golfclub Zwolle:

Area (Hectares) Turfgrass Species Sward Composition
Greens 1,4 Festuca rubra 30 %
  Agrostis stolonifera 40 %
Tees 0,8 Agrostis stolonifera 40 %
  Poa pratensis 25 %
Fairways 10 Poa pratensis 25 %
  Lolium perenne 35 %
Other 2 Poa pratensis 25 %
  Lolium perenne 35 %

These turfgrasses are optimal for the circumstances at Golfclub Zwolle because:

Discreet on-course signage and furniture The terrain furniture has been selected with care and is maintained accordingly.
Conservation of specimin trees The older, monumental trees on the golf course have been inventoried and are being caringly managed and maintained.
Activity Description

Golfclub Zwolle is undertaking the following activities to improve the landscape ecology of the golf course:

Minimizing the amount of amenity grass The surface intensively mowed grass is kept to a minimum. By determining which elements fall outside the game and which are of importance to the character of the natural landscape, only some elements need to be extensively mowed.
Increasing the size of habitat patches Where possible, management is expanded or natural elements are constructed.
Connection of internal habitat patches The nature management plan is aimed at optimising the biodiversity. A part of this includes connecting plant squares, brushwood and water elements.
Connection of patches with external habitats A keen inventory of natural elements both on the course and in its neighbouring landscape allows for improved management and maintenance. For instance, equal goal setting of natural elements on and outside the course can take place.
Creation of habitat corridors The golf course is not located in a national natural ecological corridor. However, connection to and continuity with bordering terrain is actively sought after.
Avoidance of habitat fragmentation Those locations with a high nature value have been indicated in the nature management plan and are being duly protected and maintained.
Improving and diversifying habitat edges Edges of plant squares contain borders and casings.
Activity Description

Golfclub Zwolle is undertaking the following activities to improve the quality of habitats on the golf course:

Creation of botanically rich rough grassland The natural diversity of vegetation is increased by extensive mowing.
Ecologically informed management of scrub vegetation There is multiannual management plan in place carried out on the basis of a cycle.
Promoting species and structually diverse woodlands The management plan provides guidelines to an ecologically valuable and durable situation.
Maintenance of an appropriate balance of open water and aquatic vegetation The management of the banks and the cleaning of the ditches and water elements are carried out in phases. This allows for continuity of both thin and thick vegetation.
Naturalisation of linear habitats A division has been made of intensive and extensive green in order to create a good balance between nature and the game of golf.
Activity Description

Golfclub Zwolle is undertaking the following activities to conserve and enhance biodiversity on the golf course:

Control / management of alien species Non-native, exotic species, are controlled as much as possible.

Creation of micro-habitats (eg log and stone piles) Microhabitats have been created at various locations on the course, such as breeding ground, grooves of branches and woodpiles.
Activity Description

Water

The quality of the natural green elements is directly related to the water’s quality, quantity and level fluctuations. The golf course has a separate water system that is mostly independent from bordering water sources (ditches, the Herfterwetering and the Emmertochtsloot) operated by the Groot Salland district water board. The water system on the golf course exists of a few large water gardens, pools and some smaller water sources. Horizontal drainage is responsible for the drainage of parts of the terrain. This drainage water primarily flows into the water gardens and from there into the Herfterwetering or the Emmertochtsloot via a one-way valve. The one-way valve prevents the leat’s nutrient rich water from entering the golf course’s water sources.

instroomt.

Energy & Resources

Golf Club Zwolle has been actively pursuing energy savings for some time and has included it as an important theme in their environmental care plan. This plan contains a.o. the policy and formulates the ambitions in carrying out responsible energy usage. Usage statistics of individual elements are logged and analysed on a yearly basis. Energy saving measures taken so far include the installation of a solar energy driven boiler, motion detectors and the use of energy-saving lamps. Furthermore, the club purchases products with a favourable energy label when purchasing new equipment.

Products & Supply Chains

The restaurant and pro-shop are outsourced and purchasing is not subject to specific guidelines. The pro-shop is stocked by a shopkeeper from another golf course.
Local suppliers and products are used as much as possible in purchasing done for the golf course. There is a preference for bulk packaging and various products are delivered in BigBags. This is also valid for the purchase of materials like the use of FSC-certified wood and recycled plastic (hazard poles).
The use of chemical fertilisers is minimised allowing for the greater use of organic fertilisers. Yearly soil analyses support this manner of application. Pesticides are only used on the golf course when there are symptoms indicating the advent of pests or diseases. Water usage is minimised by using surfactants and soil improvers (matrix, store-it).
Various measures are being taken to minimise and separate waste. Waste collection of chemical substances, glass, paper, metal and green waste is done separately.

Environmental Quality

Environmental care is being given a lot of attention nowadays. Think for instance about climate change as a result of human activity. It is easy and tempting to place the responsibility for environmental care in the hands of others or to entrust it to higher institutions. This is not the right attitude since a lot can be done at individual and local levels. Therefore, Golf Club Zwolle has made environmental conservation a central theme in their policy. Their environmental care policy explains the club’s ambitions concerning the golf course and aims to take conservation to the next level.

People & Communities

Currently, no activities have been organised to communicate the club’s nature- and environmental policies or to promote the golf course. Certification will provide a reason to commence these communication activities.
However, there has been ample contact with the golf course’s neighbouring parties throughout the years. Meetings are organised regularly by the executive committee to inform and discuss the developments of the golf course.
