Landscape & Ecosystems

De Hilversumsche Golf Club is located in National Park “De Utrechtse Heuvelrug”, a park of national and international importance, and is designated by the European Union as a Natura 2000 area. The effect of this park on the golf course can be seen from the diversity of valuable flora and fauna. Woodland, grassland, shrubs en heath land are the most common habitat types. The surface area of an open water source is minimal but of high value due to the presence of the Great Crested Newt, a relic of the Ice Age, as well as other amphibians. Approximately 80 bird species have been inventoried and underlines the value of the terrain. Think of typical woods species and river edge birds, such as the Green and Black Woodpecker and the Tawny Owl. An inventory of mushrooms lists 50 types and furthermore illustrates the diversity of habitats. As a result of nature conservation, many mammals can be observed including the European Polecat, European Badger, and the Marten. The golf course is designed by the architects Henry Burrows and Harry Shapland Colt. The latter is a world renowned architect and the cultural historical value of the design is great. The landscape contains old characteristics, such as the shapes of pools that stem from the Ice Age.

Hilversumsche Golf Club is making the following efforts to manage the playing quality expectations of customers:

Establishing clear internal policies for irrigation, fertilization, colour, cutting heights, overseeding etc The course commission adheres to a course management plan that includes all daily operations, frequencies and goals. The manner of maintenance has been established in a contract. The contractor discusses further planning of details during regular meetings.
Promoting the playing quality values of more naturalized turf, particularly fairways and semi-rough Member support is sought by communicating about both the maintenance issues and the reasoning behind the choices being made. Members also seek direct contact with green-keeping or the commission if concerned about a specific situation like dry areas on the course.
Promoting the financial benefits of presenting sustainable surfaces The choices for the design and maintenance of various elements are transparent and accessible to members. Regular publication via the website or club newsletter addresses issues that have given rise to concern. A request for intensified maintenance is often parried with the financial consequences.
Improving customer understanding around greens maintenance Golfers are informed through various means concerning maintenance activities on the course. Intensive maintenance is also listed on the website or mentioned by phone thereby successfully staving off any unpleasant surprises.
Demonstrating the direct relationship between environmental best practice and year round high quality playing surfaces Sustainable terrain management clearly stipulates to all stakeholders which maintenance measures have been taken and how they are related to the results of good, playable greens and to the limited amount of closures.

Conservation & Enhancement

Hilversumsche Golf Club is undertaking the following activities to conserve and enhance landscape character:

Allowing seasonal variation of course colouration and texture Discolouration resulting from drought (to a certain extent) and other factors are seen as an addition to the natural quality of the landscape and the quality of the game.
Appropriately matching mowing lines to contours The mowing lines of the fairways and semi-rough are, under supervision of an architect, well tuned in to the undulations and different elements of the terrain. The mowing lines have been laid down in a detailed mowing management plan.
Protection and restoration of historic features Present historical elements are restored where possible.
Discreet on-course signage and furniture The terrain furniture has been selected with care and is maintained accordingly.
Conservation of specimin trees The older, monumental trees on the golf course have been inventoried (114) and are being caringly managed and maintained.
Screening and softening unsightly man-made features Constructions that do not correlate to the landscape are being obscured through vegetation.
Activity Description

Hilversumsche Golf Club is undertaking the following activities to improve the landscape ecology of the golf course:

Minimizing the amount of amenity grass The surface intensively mowed grass is kept to a minimum. By determining which elements fall outside the game and which are of importance to the character of the natural landscape, only some elements need to be extensively mowed.
Increasing the size of habitat patches Where possible, management is expanded or natural elements are constructed.
Connection of internal habitat patches The nature management plan is aimed at optimising the biodiversity. A part of this includes connecting plant squares, brushwood and water elements.
Connection of patches with external habitats A keen inventory of natural elements both on the course and in its neighbouring landscape allows for improved management and maintenance. For instance, equal goal setting of natural elements on and outside the course can take place.
Creation of habitat corridors The golf course is part of an ecological main structure. Its goals are known and interwoven with the nature policy of the golf course.
Activity Description

Hilversumsche Golf Club is undertaking the following activities to improve the quality of habitats on the golf course:

Creation of botanically rich rough grassland The natural diversity of vegetation is increased by mowing and removal of clippings.

Activity Description

Water

Groundwater is used for irrigation of the greens and tees. Water usage is geared at optimal savings. The water is of good quality. Water usage is verified yearly and in 2009 resulted in 30.000 cubic metres. This was 10.000 cubic metres more than usual as a result of the irrigation of five extra greens. The renewal into a single head controlled system will create greater efficiency and reduce usage. While there is fairway irrigation, we accept discolouration and hardening of the fairways under dry weather conditions. The use of wetting-agents and the incorporation of evaporation- and weather data are used to optimise irrigation.

Energy & Resources

The aim is to reduce energy usage as much as possible. Big savings can be made through the renovation of buildings onsite. For example, installation of low energy lights with sensory timers was used in the reconstruction of the buggy storage. Lighting on the parking has been replaced by LED lighting which produces a 90% reduction. Furthermore, experiments are being carried out with new products to further reduce costs.
The maintenance facility will be modernised. During this renovation, focus will be placed on optimal insulation and the application of other energy-saving methods.
