Landscape & Ecosystems
The Royal Haagsche Golf & Country Club is a links-course located in the dunes of Wassenaar, near The Hague, and is known in Europe as a ‘Championship Course.’ This unique course is located in a valuable dune area approximately three to four kilometres from the North Sea. The course is part of the Meijendal dune area. The Haagsche has made it their responsibility to not only conserve or restore the nature found on its terrain, but also to improve and optimise it without making concessions to the game of golf.
The Meijendal dune area consists mainly of parabolic dunes with various slacks. The landside of the golf course is bordered by the high, steep inner wall of the dunes.
The dune area has an open character marked by local forest, thicket, and dune grasslands. Approximately half of its surface area constitutes the golf terrain. Located between the various holes are valuable open dune grasslands, high and low thicket, and woodland.

Water
The terrain of The Royal Haagsche Golf & Country Club is located in the water-collection area of the Dune Water Company South Holland. It is situated between the deep and the shallow collection areas of the Kijfhoek and Bierlap, and the deep collection area of ‘de Kaswetering.’ There are no infiltration pools in the direct vicinity of the golf course. The water collection from the shallow groundwater area has only a small impact on the terrain. Hydrologic monitoring by the Dune Water Company South Holland shows that groundwater in the shallow parts is located at approximately 2.5 metres below NAP. For this reason, there are no actual or potential moist dune valleys on the terrain. In 1938, the course was built with an underground network of water pipes meant for irrigation. Around 1970, the ‘Haagsche’ was the first golf club to install an automatic irrigation system. This was replaced by a fully modernised system in 2006 which allows for selective irrigation, thereby, enabling separate parts of the course to be watered and to be monitored. This leads to increased water efficiency and meets their policy in minimising water usage.
Evaporation is minimised by irrigating only during the evenings and nights. Irrigation is limited to the greens and tees, and never more than is necessary for the desired quality of the different elements on the course. Limited irrigation, in general, leads to improved quality of the grass mat. As much use is made of the sector sprinklers as possible in order to prevent water from seeping into the roughs or the dune landscape.

Products & Supply Chains
Purchasing focuses on finding environmentally-friendly products, especially concerning those purchases for the machine park. Can certain machines be replaced by less polluting and more silent ones like electrically-powered machines? A hybrid machine has been acquired and further replacements by hybrids or fully electrically-powered machines are being considered at the moment. These are more economical and less sensitive to leaks and breakdowns.

Environmental Quality
The KHG&CC policy stipulates responsible nature management. It also strives for continual improvements in their activities for a cleaner environment. The business model used consists of management systems for quality improvement, Arbo and the environment. The environmental management plan first aims to inventory what kind of impact the game of golf has on the environment, followed by recommendations and proposals for improvement. The KHG&CC carries out a proactive policy with regard to exploitation based on sustainability. This entails a permanent ambition to reduce environmental impact in the broadest sense and to simultaneously educate all members and staff in environmental awareness management.
