Landscape & Ecosystems

The area where Kristianstads Golf Club is situated is a part of Kristianstads Vattenrike Biosphere Reserve (KVBR). Biosphere reserves are fairly large areas of the landscape with great natural values, where work is based on conservation and development. In 2005 UNESCO recognised Kristianstads Vattenrike as a biosphere reserve.

KVBR is currently working with different theme areas. The sandy grasslands around the village of Åhus is one of these. The work focuses on a landscape perspective with the aim of preserving and improving the natural and cultural values of the area, and of improving the opportunities for people who live and work in the area to make sustainable use of these values.

The rotational system of cultivation and fallow on the sandy soils around Åhus (read more under \"Landscape & Heritage\"), has given rise to a very special type of landscape with flora and fauna of national and, in several cases, international interest. The only Scandinavian and Northern European populations of several red-listed insect species are to be found in the Åhus area.

It is very important to have a frequently cultural practice to keep the turf healthy and in balance. Because of the natural drainage the timing of the fertilize occasions is very important for having healthy plants. The main grass selection on the Åhus West golf course are fescue( festuca rubra) and it is ideal on our dry, sandy site. On Åhus East golf course we always continue to introduce this sustainable grass when we seed (tees, faiways). The grass species above refer to the most dominant on each course, both Åhus West and Åhus East. The course Åhus East maintains the following turfgrass species:
Poa annua (90%), Agrostis tenuis, Agrostis stolonifera, Festuca rubra, Poa pratensis, Lolium perenne.

Kristianstads Golf Klubb i Åhus is undertaking the following activities to improve the quality of habitats on the golf course:

Creation of botanically rich rough grassland Since the Bronze Age the land around Åhus has been extensively managed by a rotational system of cultivation and fallow. The soils were so poor that the fields could only be planted every few years. Between times they had to lie fallow and accumulate nutrients, and were usually used for grazing cattle. Some fields were so poor that they could only be cultivated every 20 years. In his Skåne Journey from 1749 the Swedish botanist Linnaeus describes the sweet fragrance of the unusual Sand Pink on the sandy fields outside Åhus. The rotational system of cultivation and fallow has given rise to a very special type of landscape and nature.
We have done hay-making in roughs and created plots with bare sand in order to improve the quality of habitats.
Establishment of littoral shelves and marginal vegetation in wetland areas Naturalisation of pond margins to improve oxygenation

Water

We have two golf courses, Åhus West and Åhus East. On the West golf course we have sustainable grasses of the whole area so we only water when needed. On the East golf course we need to water more frequently to keep the grass alive. We always try to reduce the water consumtion for managing the turf. To have a high quality on the playing areas is important and within the goals of Kristianstads Golf Club in Åhus. During 2010 we have changed to public/potable water supply, eccept irrigation system, and therefore we have the highest water quality within the facility. The golf course area is situated above northern Europe's largest groundwater reservoir.

Creation of new paths and nature trails Se above about the STERF-project
Installation of effective and welcoming signage The path has signs with information about the unique nature. The ploughed and harrowed areas have signs describing the purpose with the actions
Providing opportunities for other recreation (e.g. fishing) Nature walking tours
Continuation of traditional agricultural activities Ever since the Stone Age people have lived in this area. At a culture-historical inventory several historical remains were found, for example an arrow point and rests of settlements etc.

Since the Bronze Age the land around Åhus has been extensively managed by a rotational system of cultivation and fallow.
