Landscape & Ecosystems

The terrain of the Nieuwegein Golf Club comprises a surface area of approximately 26 hectares and covers ground in two municipalities, Houten and Nieuwegein. The golf course has a fairly open character marked by trees and shrubs, water elements and a view of Castle Heemstede and its orangery. The southeast side of the terrain is bordered by the A27 and the northwest side by agrarian land. In the past, this land constituted the castle gardens of Castle Heemstede. Along the southern side of the course flows the Amsterdam Rijn Canal, parallel to the Heemsteedseweg.
The flora and fauna found today are part of the river banks and vegetation of old. The area used to contain an orchard that was surrounded by ascending vegetation. Along the eastern and northern sides of the terrain are thornapples, chestnut trees, willows, alder, European ash and multi-reed. This vegetation is considered to be of high value to nature and have been included as much as possible in the design of the golf course.

Water

Water in this area can be divided into two sources: groundwater and surface water. These two sources are connected to each other and exchange between them takes place. Next follows a description of the present situation. The terrain is well-drained so that precipitation can stream into the groundwater or surface water. The water system of the surface water consists of one main waterway along the eastern edge with a summer level of 0.1 metre + NAP and a winter level of 0.1 metre – NAP. The ponds along the eastern edge of the golf course have the same levels. The central and western part of the golf course and driving range have a surface water level of 0.6 metre + NAP in the summer and 0.45 metre + NAP in the winter. Surface water is used for irrigation of the golf course.

Energy & Resources

The golf course is largely dependent on the demands placed by government legislation with regard to its environmental-technological developments. The golf club, however, is proactive in researching and applying environmentally-friendly renovations to its accommodations. This concerns, for instance, energy-saving facilities, the use of FSC wood, recycling and carrying out sustainable management. The energy usage of the Nieuwegein Golf Club is monitored closely and data is inputted monthly in the registration system (EMS). The clubhouse is relatively new and energy-saving methods, such as light sensors and energy-saving bulbs, have been applied. The kitchen was recently completely renovated and refitted with new equipment.

Products & Supply Chains

The basic principle driving policy at the Nieuwegein Golf Club is the sustainable maintenance and purchasing of materials. Green-keeping ensures structural maintenance of the machines in order to avoid unnecessary abrasion. When making large purchases and in carrying out reparations, products and materials are selected based on durability and origin. For example, the wooden parts of an engineered sheet and bridge are made of FSC-certified material and the contractor is ISO certified. Close attention is paid to the analysis of the quality of soil and grass in order to reduce the use of additives and to lessen the environmental impact of maintenance. Due to this structural management and maintenance approach, improvements are being worked on continuously.
A recently completed renovation project can be used as an example. The construction of a dam wall, timbering, furniture and bridges was carried out using certified materials. A long-term approach formed the point of departure for these renovations, namely, creating coherence within the landscape and taking cultural historical perspectives into account.
