In advance 2 weeks of communication, and after carefully refer to the documents and datum of the certification and application of the club, I came to visit Jinji Lake Golf Club on August 10th. I was with the general manager of the club, Mr. Li Dawei, the club director Miss Xu Wenxiu, and the course superintendent, Mr. Bao Zhenghui, for nearly an hours meeting. I had been communicating with them about the relevant issues of this certification renewal from GEO, and informations of the club certification needs to understand and confirm. After the meeting, I mainly communicated with the superintendent Mr. Bao Zhenghui, about the environmental protection measures taken by the club in Nature, Water, Energy, Supply chain, Pollution control, and Community. Our conversation lasted for two hours. Accompanied by Mr. Bao, I took a tour to look at the 27-hole course, pump station, club buildings, course maintenance center and its office area. During this tour, I met Mr. Zhang, Director of mechanic, and Mr. Gu Hong, Director of engineer, conducted communication and inquiry with them. Through communication with the club management personnel and site view, I saw lots of fact to make me to recognize the club was maintaining GEO concept of environmental protection, and implementation effect, at the same time there is a lot of progress, for example, to further reduce the area of the turf, reduce the use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides, keep switching to low-power lighting facilities, reduce energy consumption, increase oil and electricity mix mowers, use clean energy, and reduce fuel use. But I also found that there were still some areas for improvement in environmental protection, for example, there were few initiatives to promote environmental protection between clubs and surrounding hotels, some sprinklers head of the course can not play its due role in the shrub, wasting water resources. Still, overall, I think the Jinji Lake Golf Club has been sticking to the requirements of environmental protection of GEO, maken great efforts to promote the club's ecological sustainable development, environmental protection basically reached the certification renewal standards and can be recommended for achieving GEO Certified status again.
There are no new building additons to the club's 116-hectare site, and no new communities developed around it. The links, wetland and forest landscape style are very distinct in the 27 holes course. In 'links' nine holes' rough area, tall fescue has been becoming wild, local grass "Cogongrass (Imperata cylindrica)" grows fast, it may become into one of the dominant species. The landscape of this nine holes is closer to the natural style of links. In 'forest' nine holes, the evergreen shrub that replaced the turf before 2016 has grown well and has increased the level of the landscape, while reducing the maintenance area of the turf. In 'wetland' nine holes, turf of semi-rough area was renovated since last year, about 50000 square meters of turf was reduced, and changed into mixed wild flowers and landscape grass. Wetland landscape is more natural, also nearly 15% of turf maintenance is reduced, resulting in natural areas of the course and plant species increased.
Turf maintenance area has been reduced, the natural landscape plants were added accordingly, such as: mixed wild flowers and low input landscape grass. About 50000 square meters of bermudagrass turf was reduced, and the plant added include: holly, azaleas, lotus, water lily, wild flower, and miscanthus. Wild animal species increasing has not yet been observed. Overseeding area of the course was reduce, tee area was not overseeded. Course superintendent has been in close communication with GEO environmental protection platform, has a deep understanding of the relationship between ecological system and landscape environment, and between the course maintenance and players' golf requirement. The course superintendent has carried out the concept of eco-environmental sustainable development, which has led to the implementation of an increase of natural areas in the course, and has done a lot of work to promote course naturalization.
In 'links' nine holes, wild cogongrass has taken over more than a third of the rough area, which makes the area more naturalized. At the same time, the artificial maintenance intervention in the out-of-play areas was reduced, and only once a year was mowed which is now a more protective action for plants and animals in the area. There are some areas that can be improved even further - the plant diversity can be increased in some rough areas, and more space can be given to naturalization of the site.
There was no change in turfgrass species in green, tee, fairway and semi-rough area of the course. Wild plant species increased in rough and isolation area, these plant include: cogongrass, Japanese metaplexis, paspalum.
I had observed that the club protects habitats and environment by increasing the area of natural area, which reduced the according turf area need for maintenance such as mowing, fertilizing, irrigation and pestcide use. In woodlands, the use of clips and branch cuttings to cover the ground surface enhanced the sense of view and recycled natural resources. Physical maintenance such as coring and topdressing was increased.
The water source of the club mainly lake water and municipal water. The drainage is mainly for inland lakes and municipal sewage pipes. No treated sewage is used. The amount of water used in the 2014 and 2016 was different from each annually, and this difference is related to the rounds played each year. The variation of water consumption in the course is related to the annual rainfall.
Water source was not changed: course irrigation and machines washing used water in lakes, water used in club is from municipal water. In the past three years, irrigation water consumption for the course has changed greatly. The amount of water used varies by the largest amount, which is close to 300,000,000 liters. The main reason for this is that it has to do with the annual rainfall. The amount of water used by the club has increased by nearly 20,000,000 liters per year over the past three years, and enquiries have been made about the increase, which indicate the increase is related to the play rounds increase every year.
The center control system is used to control sprinkler system in this course, and installed fertigation system. The control software has just been updated this year. The system is more stable and easy to control. The operation of sprinkler irrigation system is to add artificial adjustment to the central control. The sprinkler irrigation is covered all of the turf area. Irrigation efficiency is high. The deficiency is that the sprinkler head in some areas is not adjusted after some turf area renovation, and the sprinkler head can not play an efficient role in shrubs.
The course reduced the area of the turf and reduced the area of sprinkler irrigation, saved irrigation water. Fertigation system is used in summer, which saved the water used after the fertilization, at the same time increase the fertilizer efficiency. The faucet used in the clubhouse uses a quick switch, which reduces the water consumption to a certain extent.
Energy used by the club did not change, but hybrid devices was begun to use for turfgrass mowing, to reduce the use of fuel. Annual energy use was changed due to the play rounds and climate change.
Power was mainly used by Clubhouse and course lighting, and pump station. Natural gas was mainly used for heating bath water and cooking. Fuel was mainly used for course maintenance machines and vehicles of club. Energy consumption had a declining trend from 2014 to 2016.
Three hybrid 5-unit mowers and 3-unit mower were purchased by club to reduce feul consumption. LED lights were constantly used to replace the regular lights every year, electrical power use reduce from 50W to 10W for each light. The club also changed the opening time of the lighting course to reduce the use of electricity. The lighting course opening was postponed one month every year and reduced 1 hour use for each day.
Through observation and understanding of club procurement supply chain I found out that domestic purchases of commodities had replaced some imported products. New products of environmental protection was increased in the procurement of pesticide and fertilizer. The club management persisted in practising strict economy.
The purchasing policies are shopping around, focusing on cost performance, pay attention to the long-term cooperation with the supplier.
The club choose environmental protection products for pesticide and fungicide, and positively used domestic products, increased the number of suppliers. For example, the club used domestic dipyrethane products replaced imported to save 1000 yuan for each kilogram products.
There had been a decrease in the amount of fertilizers and pesticides used in course turf management. Nitrogen fertilizer was reduced. Superintendent adjusted the N ratio of nitrogen fertilizer to reduce amount of N use. He also increased coring and topdressing for course turf, which increased 6 times or green topdressing every year, to promote the anti-disease ability of turfgrass and reduce the use of pesticides. But this year the price of sand has increased, which lead to increase the cost of topdressing.
The club disassembled the scrapped machinery to reuse the parts, and made some machines degrade, such as made old fairway mower to cut rough area. The club has been consistently crushing branches which pruned from the tree in the course, to recycle and use as ground covers. The sand from coring was also consistently reused to put back in the turf.
The drainage system of the club has advanced and separate rain water and sewage, sewage discharged into the municipal sewage pipe. The club has carried on the special deposit to pollution hazards, which treated by professional processing company. In the course, the turf close to lake edges is keep as rough area, which to buffer polluted water flow in the lake. The amount of fertilizers and pesticides used were controled to avoid environmental pollution.
The lake water was not tested by lab, but it is visually clear. The lake in the course is visually less eutrophication than the lake outside the course, and there is no such widespread blue algae problem.
Waste water is drained into the municipal sewage treatment system.
Hazardous materials were specially separated and deposited and treated by professional processing company.
In the clubhouse, the daily sewage of catering and bathing is included in municipal pipeline treatment. The oil fume in the kitchen is handled by professional exhaust fume equipment. Waste oil etc. is stored and processed separately in the maintenance center. And water used to flush vehicles is drained into municipal sewage pipes.
On the golf course, the buffer area with long grass rough is used to prevent heavy rain wash pesticide and fertilizer into the lakes. The dosage of each fertilizer and spray is strictly controlled to prevent the harmful effects of overdose.
There are no adjacent communities around the club, relatively independent, and there is a hotel nearly. GEO certification make the eco-environmental protection concept promoted in the club and members obviously.
I had checked the annual trainning records of the staffs of maintence center, they are all trained strictly to understand the important function of precise fertilization, spray and irrigation for eco-environmental protection
During the annual winter, superintendent organizes the key personnel to conduct training and study, paticipate in the turf management communication meeting of the industry, and implement the working methods and concepts of sustainable environmental management.
The club has a certain interaction with adjacent hotels, through the promotioin activities, guests can understand the concepts of ecological environmental protection and sustainable environment management.
I communicated with the director of operation of the club, and found she had deep understanding and knowledge of eco-environment protection, and she had conducted related training for the staffs of her department.
The club hosted some external events, the guests were very interested in the GEO certification, which promotes the eco-environment protection and sustainability idea.

Jinji Lake has persisted with conducting the GEO requirements of environmental protection, continues to reach the certification standards and achieve desired levels of sustainability awareness and performance. Following this on-site verification I can recommend the club renews its certification for the next 3-year period.
The club has adhered to previous environmental measures and maintained previous environmental achievements, which greatly reduced the risk of environmental pollution.
The course further reduced the area of turf, increased natural area and habitat.
Within the club, the concept of environmental protection has been strengthened and is well communicated.
