Nature

The Hilversumsche Golf Club is situated in the woods of the Utrechtse Heuvelrug. On the westside it borders with the A27 motorway. The other boundaries of the course border with woodlands. Since the course is surrounded by serenity and an ancient existing natural environment, it is rich in species of flora and fauna. The most important 'ecotopes' are grassland vegetation as well as woodlands, shrubs and heather. There is little surface water besides some natural pools. The pools are the habitat of the Triturus Coistatus (salamander) and other amphibians. There are roughly 80 different bird species that additionally underscore the importance of the area. There is a variety of woodlands and 'randvogel' such as the green and black woodpecker and the wood owl/tawny owl. Some 50 sorts of mushrooms have been spotted amoungst which the molenaar, the Psilocybe Semilanceata (puntige kaalkopje) and the Mycena Pura (elfenschermpje). Because of the extensive environmental protection there are many mammals living in the area amongst which skunks, badgers and martens. The area is bestowed with some very characteristic features such as in the form of a croissant shaped pools, remmants of the ice age. The course was developed by Henry Burrows and the world famous Harry Shapland Colt. The course is thus of cultural and historic importance. Since november 2013 the grounds of the Hilversumsche Golf Club have officially gained the status of 'estate': Landgoed Kievitsdel.

Upon adivse of our agronomist David Stansfield and in preparation of the Green Deal (elimination of herbicides and pesticides by 2020), we have conducted a pilot on four greens, adding Agrostis Canina (Velvet Bent) to the existing turfgrasses.

Conservation & Enhancement

This golf facility is undertaking the following activities to conserve landscape character:

Activity Description
Allowing seasonal variation of course coloration and texture In summertime we allow the fairways to be yellow in times of drought.
Appropriately matching mowing lines to contours It is common practice to mowe the lines to contours of the course.
Protection and restoration of historic features With the financial support of the Province of Noord Holland the silted up pool (dell) was restored in phases in order to accommodate the habitat of the tritures cristatus (kamsalamander). This endangered species is protected in The Netherlands. Volunteers of the ‘poelenwerkgroep Het Gooi’ monitor the amount of amphibians in the pond and in the pool, once a year.
Discreet on-course signage and furniture We installed new discreet mow overtiles instead of ugly signs.
During the winterseason 2015/1016 we have replaced all plastic waste bins by wooden casings for waste separation.
Conservation of specimen trees Flora and fauna are digitally mapped. In 2011 the flora and fauna were surveyed for the second time. On the basis of the Nature and Environmental Plan (Natuur- en milieuplan) and the foresty and heatherplan (Bos- en heidebeheerplan) the HGC aims for the largest possible diversity in plants and animals. This in harmony with the environment and to respect the authenticity of the course as much as possible. We work according to forestry, flora and fauna codes of the Forestry Board in The Netherlands.
Screening and softening unsightly man-made features Inapplicable, Hilversumsche is an over 100 years old course.

Water

For the irrigation of the course groundwater is pumped up from two sources, each source generating 34 cubic meters per hour. The HGC does not have natural pools that could be used for irrigation.Since the introduction of single head control sprinklers irrigation can be achieved in an efficient manner. We accept that at times of drought the fairway becomes hard and discolored. By making use of revolution en soil improvement measures the water that is irrigated is optimally used.

Energy

The aim is to reduce the energy consumption as much as possible. In view of the investments needed to create substantial savings, efforts were principally undertaken when renovations were implemented. However, as the HGC moves towards building a new clubhouse all together, any potential renovations are currently on hold while only the basic repairs are performed. Nevertheless, the bags and carts storage was recently refurbished and fitted with energy saving lightning sensitive to movement. Lighting in the parking area was replaced with LED lightning resulting in savings of about 90%. The greenkeepers quarters have been modernised. Any possibilities to optimize isolation and other steps towards energy saving have been contemplated, resulting in a relatively stable energy consumption despite 6 km of low wattage electric fence and a permanent tool repair shop at the greenkeepers quarters. And despite 3 consecutive years of organizing the KLM Open tournament.

Supply Chain

Board and collaborators of the HGC are aware of the need to effectively streamline the supply chain from purchase to waste in accordance with the aim to minimize impact and where possible to achieve a positive environmental balance. Waste materials are separated in two waste corridors from where they are collected by a certified waste collecting firm. The use of the most harmful materials such as crop protectors is minimized but remain a necessary part of the enterprise.
