The Noordwijkse Golf club’s history dates back to 1915 when the club opened their nine-hole course just north of the village of Noordwijk. In 1971 a new 18-hole course was opened just 5 kilometres north of the old one. It is a beautifully constructed course located in a vast coastal dune area of 68 hectares. The golf course is situated in the area of the future ‘Hollandse Duinen’ national park (realisation 2019), which will eventually stretch out over a large part of the South Holland province’s coastal region. Nature

The golf course of the Noordwijkse Golfclub is built in ‘Object Noordwijk’, a rare and beautiful dune area that is part of Staatsbosbeheer’s terrain “Hollands Duin”. The dune area is part of a big coastal dune area, Kennemerland-South and is appointed as an Natura 2000-site.
On the golf course itself, four different types of landscape can be found: the coastal dunes, white dunes, gray dunes and a pine forest.
The composition of these dunes is under a constant change. The golf course is a part of a dynamic natural dune area. From the seashore to the dune woods we find a large scale of different species of animals and plants, each with their ideal biotope. For example, the golf course has shrubs of sallow thorn, overgrown dunes with Clove-scented Broomrape, Kidney-vetch and Carline thistle, and the Grayling, Sand Lizard and Eurasian Skylark have made the golf course their home.
The golf club wishes to maintain and improve the natural values of the course. In order to reach this goal, the management is carefully planned and the natural values are monitored regularly.

De golfbaan van de Noordwijkse Golfclub is gelegen in “Object Noordwijk”, een bijzonder mooi duingebied dat deel is van het Staatsbosbeheergebied “Beheerseenheid Hollands Duin”. Het “Object Noordwijk” is onderdeel van een groter kustduingebied, Kennemerland-Zuid, dat is aangewezen als Habitatrichtlijngebied.
Op de golfbaan zijn vier typen landschap te onderscheiden: zeereep, open zeeduin, middenduin en dennenbos met ieder een eigen karakter.
De samenstelling en uitstraling van de verschillende landschapzones verandert voortdurend. De golfbaan is tenslotte gelegen in een dynamisch duingebied. Vanaf de zeereep richting de duinbossen komt een scala aan verschillende soorten planten en dieren voor die ieder een eigen ideale vestigingsplek hebben. Zo beschikt de golfbaan over duindoornstruwelen, begroeid duin met walstrobremraap, wondklaver en driedistel en hebben soorten als de heivlinder, zandhagedis en veldleeuwerik er hun plek gevonden. De golfclub heeft de wens om de aanwezige natuurwaarden te verhogen en te behouden. Om dit te bereiken wordt het beheer nauwkeurig gepland en worden natuurwaarden geinventariseerd.

Water

Public water is used in the NGC clubhouse for the restaurant facilities, changing rooms and shower facilities and also in several other locations. The NGC public water consumption compares favourably with that of comparable golfclubs. For irrigation of the fairways and greens the golf club uses groundwater, since there is a limited supply of surface water. The groundwater is pumped up from 15 meters deep. Four times a year the groundwater level is monitored using stand pipes. Once a year the Chloride content is measured. The quantity of water necessary for irrigation is determined by using weather data and the soil moisture levels. Using a fully computer controlled irrigation system, the quantity of irrigation water is kept at an optimum. The used quantities are registered with water meters. Since the water usage of the maintenance facility is only a small part of the total use of potable water, the golf club has given the total usage numbers for the club house and the maintenance facility combined.

Leidingwater wordt gebruikt In het NGC clubhuis voor de restaurant faciliteiten en kleedkamers en douche faciliteiten en ook in verschillende andere locaties. Het verbruik van leidingwater door de NGC steekt gunstig af bij dat van andere vergelijkbare golfclubs. Voor beregening van de fairways en greens wordt gebruik gemaakt van grondwater, aangezien er beperkt oppervlaktewater beschikbaar is. Er wordt gebruik gemaakt van grondwater dat van 15 meter diepte wordt opgepompt. Middels peilbuizen wordt 4x per jaar de grondwaterstand opgenomen. Jaarlijks wordt het Chloride gehalte bepaald. De benodigde hoeveelheid water wordt bepaald aan de hand van een analyse van de weersomstandigheden en het vochtgehalte in de bodem. Middels een volledig computergestuurd irrigatiesysteem wordt de hoeveelheid beregening zo optimaal mogelijk gehouden. De opgenomen grondwaterhoeveelheden worden bijgehouden met watermeters. Aangezien het waterverbruik in de werkloods slecht een klein deel van het totaal betreft, heeft de golfclub de waterverbruikscijfers van de loods opgeteld bij die van het clubhuis.

Benchmark After conducting a benchmark with two other golf clubs nearby, we concluded that the NGC uses less potable water than the other two. We will keep on logging the use of water.
Keeping records We monitor the use of potable water every quarter of the year in order to search for deviating numbers.

Energy

For the clubhouse and direct surroundings green tariff electricity and natural gas are being used. Both are supplied by a central pipe line system. At the moment, in the clubhouse energy efficient lamps, led-lamps and regular light bulbs are being used. Also, motion sensors have been installed in the toilets, changing rooms and lockerrooms to reduce electricity consumption. The parking lot and clubhouse surroundings are illuminated by street lanterns with a day and night-sensor, such that the lanterns are being activated when dusk falls. The isolation of the clubhouse’s roof was renewed in 2005 and that of the restaurant's roof in 2013. As a result, the energy consumption was reduced. The energy consumption is registered separately for the clubhouse and greenkeeper shed. Purchased machines have a low environmental impact. The golf club wishes to minimise the usage and toxic level of oils and fuels by lowering the purchase of these products.

Voor het clubhuis en omgeving wordt gebruik gemaakt van energie op basis van Groene stroom en aardgas. Beide aangevoerd via een centraal leidingen stelsel. In het clubhuis wordt momenteel gebruik gemaakt van gloei-, spaar- en led-verlichting. Er zijn bewegingsmelders geïnstalleerd in de toiletten, de kleedkamers en de lockerruimtes om het energieverbruik te verminderen. De parkeerplaats en het verblijfsgebied worden verlicht door straatlantaarns met een dag-nachtsensor waardoor deze in de schemering geactiveerd worden. De isolatie van het dak van het clubhuis is in 2005 vernieuwd en de isolatie van het dak van het restaurant in 2013. Hierdoor is het energieverbruik gedaald. Het verbruik van elektra wordt apart bijgehouden voor het clubhuis en de werkplaats. De machines die worden gekocht hebben een lage milieubelasting. De golfclub heeft de ambitie om het verbruik en de schadelijkheid van smeervetten en brandstoffen door de inkoop van milieubelastende middelen minimaliseren.

Energy Efficiency

This golf facility is undertaking the following activities to diversify energy and fuel supply:

Adoption of green tariff grid supply We purchase green tariff electricity.
Installation of photovoltaic and / or solar panels In 2013, an independant organisation has made an energy advice (EPA). This survey showed that installing solar panes on the club house is not profitability because is the positioning of the building. We wish to do a survey on the possibilities for installing solar panes on the roof of the maintenance facility.
Use of electric hybrid vehicles The used handicarts are powered by storage batteries. As a test,we are using an electric green mower since spring 2015.
Use of recycled oils Stihl motomix is used as an environmental friendly alternative of regular oil.

This golf facility is undertaking the following activities to reduce energy consumption:

Investment in low-energy heating and air conditioning systems The gas fueled hearth in the clubhouse has been provided with a new discharge ( closed) system, allowing lower energy consumption than in the past situation.

In 2015, a new building management system has been installed. the different energy using systems are betting synchronised so that the energy use is used the best way possible.
Optimizing thermostat levels for heating and refrigeration The temperature is controlled with a thermostat. The two high yield central heating systems that were installed in 2012 provide the heating in the clubhouse. The reception building has a separate installation.
Upgrading of building insulation The isolation of the clubhouse’s roof was renewed in 2005 and that of the restaurant's roof in 2013. Further isolation measures are being considered as part of the october 2013 EPA ( Energy Performance Advice).
Use of natural light (e.g. sunlight pipes) The potential installation and operation of sunlight pipes on the greenkeepers workshop will be investigated and considered.
Installation of low-energy lighting In 2015, all lighting in the lockerrooms has been replaced with led-lighting. Futher energy-saving lighting is attained through the use of as many energy-saving lamps and led-lamps as possible.
Energy efficient lighting has been installed on the parking lots with a Tvlight-system. We hope to reduce energy consumption with this.
Use of motion sensor lighting Movement sensors are used for the lighting in the locker rooms and in the toilets.
Transition to energy efficient appliances Whenever appliances need to be replaced energy efficiency will be one of the main criteria to be used as basis for decision making.

Supply Chain

The NGC strives for a golfcourse of top quality and has put in place high demands to the quality of the products that are required for the maintenance of the golfcourse. Some of these products are slightly environmentally harmful, but we try to minimise the use of these products. We try to re-use as much material as possible, in order to minimise waste. Organic waste is most suitable for this. The other waste is being removed separately where possible.
We try to communicate digitally with our members as much as possible and as less by post as possible.
When purchasing goods for the restaurant the price /quality ratio will be assessed and we make use of local suppliers as much as possible.
Ground and sand, used for dressing, and sand for the bunkers is only purchased when it has a certificate, showing it is a responsibly produced good, causing no environmental harm.

De NGC streeft naar een golfbaan van topkwaliteit en stelt hoge eisen aan de producten die voor het onderhoud noodzakelijk zijn. Een deel van deze producten kent een zekere milieubelasting, maar er wordt wel getracht het gebruik hiervan tot een minimum te beperken. Van het afval wordt zoveel mogelijk materiaal hergebruikt om de hoeveelheid afval te minimaliseren, organisch afval is hiervoor het meest geschikt. Overig afval wordt indien mogelijk gescheiden afgevoerd.
De NGC streeft er naar om communicatie zoveel mogelijk via digitale kanalen te laten lopen en zo min mogelijk via de post.
Voor de inkoop van producten voor de horeca wordt de prijs-kwaliteit verhouding beoordeeld en er wordt zoveel mogelijk gebruik gemaakt van lokale leveranciers.
Grond en zand, benodigd voor dressen, aanvullen, bunkerzand e.d. wordt alleen aangekocht wanneer er de nodige (grond)-certificaten erbij worden geleverd waarmee aangetoond kan worden dat het een verantwoord product is waarmee geen milieuschade gepaard zal gaan.

Pollution Control

The NGC is not simply striving for legal compliance and quality, but is also continuously looking for ways to improve the total golf course management.
Waste water from the kitchen is discharged via a fat-separator to the sewers. Other waste water from the clubhouse and the reception building is discharged directly on the sewer system. In the NGC area all cleaning products, solvents, oil filters and batteries are kept in a secured storage. Fat from the kitchen, lubricants, oil filters and batteries are registrated and removed from the NGC area. The water quality is monitored regularly. The chloride content of the ground water is monitored on an annual base. Four times a year, the surface water and outflow of water is monitored.
The following years, the daily practices of the greenkeepers will be monitored and evaluated through a risk assessment.

De golfclub streeft niet alleen naar om te voldoen aan de milieuwetgeving en het voldoen aan de milieukwaliteit, maar zoekt ook continu naar manieren om het totaal golfcourse management te verbeteren.
Het afvalwater afkomstig van de keuken van het clubhuis wordt via een vetafscheider op het persriool geloosd. Overig afvalwater vanuit het clubhuis en receptiegebouw wordt direct op het persriool geloosd. In het verblijfsgebied van de NGC worden schoonmaak- en oplosmiddelen, keukenvetten en batterijen in een beveiligde opslag bewaard. Keukenvetten, smeervetten, oliefilters en batterijen worden via geregistreerde afvoer verwijderd van het golfterrein. De kwaliteit van het water wordt met regelmaat gemonitord. Zo wordt de toevoer van het grondwater jaarlijks gecontroleerd op chloride gehalte en wordt viermaal per jaar het oppervlaktewater en de uitvloei van water visueel gecontroleerd.
De komende jaren zullen de werkzaamheden van de greenkeepers beoordeeld worden middels een risico inventarisatie en evaluatie.

Asbestos On our golf course is no asbestos present. The construction of the facilities was done in a time when this material was no longer used. At the inspections of the fire department and environment survey of the municipality, no asbestos was found.

Op de NGC is, voor zover bekend, geen asbest aanwezig; de bouw heeft plaatsgevonden in een tijd dat asbest niet meer werd toegepast; bij de tweejaarlijkse inspectie door de brandweer en door de milieucontrole van de gemeenste is geen asbest geconstateerd.
Brandpreventie The boilerroom of the club house is fireproof and is build according to the legislations. There are two water tanks for the fire department on the parking lot. The shelters on the golf course and lightening conductors are checked annualy by a professional.

The NGC aims to be a good employer and act as a good citizen in its environment. Obviously, the NGC acts within the requirements of the law. The NGC maintains good communications and relationships between the club and several third parties.
The club takes initiatives to get personnel, members and guests involved in and keeps them informed about measures to ensure optimal sustainability in the management of NGC. In this way a broad support base is being created for future decisions, measures and possible savings. Through formal and informal training of personnel we stimulate and develop further awareness.
We organize information evenings and themed walks across the course for the members. We also have CtG dedicated information panels.

De NGC stelt zich ten doel als een goed werkgever voor zijn personeel en een goed burger in zijn omgeving te functioneren. Uiteraard voldoet de NGC aan de eisen van de wet. De NGC onderhoudt goede contacten en relaties met verschillende partijen buiten de NGC.
De club onderneemt initiatieven om zowel het personeel, de leden als de gasten te betrekken bij en op de hoogte te stellen van de maatregelen die worden ondernomen om een zo duurzaam mogelijke bedrijfsvoering te hanteren. The "Vereniging voor Natuur en Vogelbescherming Noordwijk "(Bird union) is involved with inventarisations and presentations.
