On Monday June 5, 2016, I conducted the first re-audit of the Golfclub De Groene Ster at Leeuwarden (the Netherlands). This audit involved reviewing the provided documents, consulting those responsible for GEO and an onsite visit. Over the past 3 years, Golfclub De Groene Ster has made progress in a number of the ‘areas of interest’ identified by the GEO Organisation. During my visit, the GEO committee made a very good impression.

De Groene Ster is an 18-holes golfcourse with a 5-holes course, par 3, for practice. The course is situated in a rural landscape 'De Wielen', near the city of Leeuwarden in the province Friesland in the north of Holland. The golfcourse takes about half of the 180 acres of the terrain. The intention of the architect(Gerard Jol) who designed the course in 1992, was to create it as a natural part of the environment. That means that small woods, shrubs and sight alternate. There are solitary trees and bushes, grassy vegetation, wetlands and and water features with their banks. Before 1992 there was nearly no other vegetation than grasslands. The biodiversity grew through the way the course and the surroundings were kept. The keeping of the landscape is focussed on facilitating both golfplay and a rich biodiversity and to match them as good as possible. An important reason to acquire the golf’s international ecolabel has to do with the vulnerable surroundings of our golf course. North of it, within short distance lies the Natura 2000 area De Grote Wielen. In addition there are plans to make an ecological connection between some holes. From 2010 till now a Geo-committee organised surveys of plants, trees/bushes, butterflies, dragonflies,toadstools and insects . Birds and breeding were surveyed already before by the former head-greenkeeper. He participated in the annual birdcounting all over the country (NGF) and he surveys the 141 nestsboxes. Survey of breedingactivities date from 2007. Interesting is the use of nestboxes for starlings. By doing this the damage in the course, caused by crows, is far less then before. This is a nice example of biological damage prevention. At the start of our GEO-committee we invited organizations in the field of ecology to make them familiar with the value of our golf course. This has yielded the cooperation of a number of experts, who made inventories in the field of flora and fauna. The Plantproject of the Fryske Feriening Fjildbology surveyed a part of the course. 33 species were found of which 6 occur on the red list (de Rode Lijst) and 3 of them occur in the Dutch Flora- and faunalaw) article 3.
The surveys will be continued and we will try to find more interested members to report findings.

Establishing clear internal policies for irrigation, fertilization, colour, cutting heights, overseeding etc We maintain our golf course according to our golfcourse management plan (baanbeheerplan 2016) and nature management plan (natuurbeheerplan 2016). In the Natuurbeheerplan (Nature Management Manual) a list of measures is mentioned, which is needed to ensure an ecological management of our golf course.

Conservation & Enhancement

This golf facility is undertaking the following activities to conserve landscape character:

Allowing seasonal variation of course coloration and texture Certain areas of grasslands are mowed but once a year, resulting in grassy vegetation with much color and a variety of wild flowers. As a result the soil will become less rich and a greater variety of plants will grow
Appropriately matching mowing lines to contours mowing lines follow the lines of shrub and tree areas
Protection and restoration of historic features There are no valuable historic elements directly on the course. The wind mill directly next to the course is a most appreciated monument and the view on this wind mill is secured
Discreet on-course signage and furniture If possible unpainted wood is used for course furniture and much attention is given to where signs are placed
Conservation of specimen trees Most of the trees are still quit young. Never the less there will be provided a more detailed woodland management plan.

This golf facility is undertaking the following activities to improve the landscape ecology of the golf course:

Activity Description
Increasing the size of habitat patches As about half of the area is used for golf, the rest is available as habitat patches; these cannot be increased, but are maintained and improved to create divers vegetation patches.
Connection of internal habitat patches Internal habitat patches are well connected, the only obstruction is a small road which cuts the golfcourse in two areas.
This road however is little used and has a speed limit of 60 km. per hour.
Connection of patches with external habitats Connection with external habitats are part of a provincial project "Ecologische Hoofdstructuur", in which our golf course is included. This project is only partially completed.
Main obstruction is the railway line south of the course. We have no influence on that.
Creation of habitat corridors Along some ditches habitat corridors have been created
Improving and diversifying habitat edges Where possible habitat edges are created and maintained as terras vegetation, a succession of grass, small shrubs, higher shrubs and trees, especially on the south side, to provide a habitat for butterflies.

This golf facility is undertaking the following activities to improve the quality of habitats on the golf course:

Activity Description
Creation of botanically rich rough grassland As the course is constructed on former farmland, the ground is rich in minerals and the grassy parts not in use for the game of golf are attenuated and maintained as hay lands. mowed once a year, the grass removed. The process results in a variety of grass species and many wild flowers. This process will take many years to complete.
Ecologically informed management of scrub vegetation Where possible shrubs and plants are maintained that attract insects and butterflies.
Promoting species and structurally diverse woodlands When constructed the area planted with trees and shrubs were rather uniform. From the beginning maintenance is done to create more diversity, as well in age of the trees as in diversity. It is a process of years.
Establishment of littoral shelves and marginal vegetation in wetland areas Water areas have been created with in mind a possibility for fish to survive severe winters, (sufficient depth) but also shelving borders for a diversity of waterplants and marsh conditions. The first positive result have been found between holes 1 and 9.
Maintenance of an appropriate balance of open water and aquatic vegetation Water courses have to be cleaned each year to maintain the off-flow of rainfall. However, this is done with care to maintain sufficient vegetation for birds and dragonflies.

This golf facility is undertaking the following activities to conserve and enhance biodiversity on the golf course:

Activity Description
Provision of nesting and nectar for pollinators Shrub areas and wild flowers are available on nearly half of the terrain.
In one part of the area a bee-keeper places 6 to 10 bee-hives.
Installation of nest boxes In 2008 140 nest-boxes have been installed and detailed data are available as to numbers and species of breeding birds of the last 5 years. There are also 2 stork nest poles and the last three years young have been raised.
Control / management of alien species Planting of flowering shrubs that are not normally found in this area is restricted to certain areas close to the club house.
Provision of hibernation areas Hibernating areas are created for fish, (deep water) and dense shrub areas for mammals.
Creation of micro-habitats (eg log and stone piles) All over the course log piles are being created and maintained. This results in a profusion of little birds, mouses, hedgehogs, stoats and weasels.

Insect damage countered by starlings. In spring crows damage the fairways in search of insects. 50 nest boxes for starlings has resulted in a definite decrease of this damage .


As explained in the introduction is our golfcourse situated in a landscape with many ditches and ponds. The watersupply comes from rainfall, surface-water and seepage. Because of this situation irrigation is not necessary very often. Greens are irrigated by a semi-automatic irrigation system. The system has been adjusted to economical use as much as possible. A part of our nozzles will be replaced by water-saving nozzles in the future. In the clubhouse and a part of our maintenance facilities we use public (potable) water. For the cleaning of our machines we use surface water. In the clubhouse we have water-saving showers.
We consult the Waterschap Fryslân about the further purification of our waste water
In order to make our members and visitors aware of an efficient use of water and energy our GEO-committee has made a communication plan (see at People&Communities).
The workshop has no separate water meter installed and shares the meter with the clubhouse. The use of potable water is estimated on 10% of the clubhouse total use. For the registration form, this calculation has already been made as seen in the tables below.

Use of efficient shower technology We use a automatic water supply system. If there is no movement the water supply stops. The watersuage of the showers has been lowered from 9 litres per minute to 7 litres per minute.
Repairing leaks Should a leak appear, it will be fixed as soon as possible.


Mostly we are using non renewable energy and resources.Last year we asked PuurTec (consultancy for energy, water and waste management) To advise us what measures we could take to save energy, water and waste. A lot of recommendations have been made. We are carrying out some of the measures, if it is financially feasible. We are also investigating whether the application of solar energy is feasible. On the clubhouse is a sloping roof, that is suitable for the application of solar panels. We have taken measures to minimise the use of electricity by replacing light bulbs, by the application of timers in the toilets and changing rooms. Also the terrace heating outdoor has a time switcher. In consultation with the clubhouse staff we are going to look at how we can more effectively deal with the kitchen equipment to reduce the electricity consumption, We are investigating whether the reduction in the voltage can futher reduce the use of electricity . The water saving showers also reduce the gas consumption. Since the last audit, we have installed a solar water heater to provide warm water for the changing rooms.

We are going to limit the amount of waste. For that reason we will registrate the tonnage of waste material. Pollution Control

The golfclub consists of a 18 hole course, a 5 hole par 3 practice course, driving range and other practice facilities. It has a clubhouse with a restaurant and golf store.
Other buildings are machinery sheds, a machinery workshop, washing facilities for machinery and room for storage of chemical product and fuel.
Responsible management being an important consideration in the club policy, an environmental quality plan (milieuzorgplan) has been established. It covers all activities that may influence environment on the total area of the golclub and adjacent areas. The environmental quality plan is, with the Nature maintenance plan (natuurbeheerplan), the basis of all maintenance activities of the club.
The golf course is laid out on former grassland. There used to be no commercial or industrial activities. No soil contamination is found. We closely follow the regional and national regulations. Especially we have attention for the further purification of the waste water, which we discharge on the surface water (with license)

Evidently the course was constructed to provide the possibility for the people of Leeuwarden to play golf.
The course is located to form a quiet buffer-zone between (sub-) urban areas, areas with a nature-reserve destination and agricultural areas.
The golf course is part of a recreational park east of Leeuwarden. Our course lies in a relatively quiet part of it. The course is publicly accessible for golf players. Everyone can be a member. A few times a year we open our golf course for public, to promote the golf sport. It also attracts publicity for the ecological value of our course.
Employment stands at about 10 FTE. of which the greenkeepers are not employed by the club, but beginning 2013 are employed by a firm (Vos Ruinerwold) specialized in golfcourse maintenance.

Media Press communications are issued at intervals, and for special occasions the media are invited. This has resulted in publications in the provincial newspaper: Leeuwarder Courant.

Schools & Colleges Students of the local agricultural school are regularly received for practical work traineeshops.
Students of a sports college receive their golf education at our facilities.

Maintenance of existing public paths There are public paths around the border of the golf course, which provide a good view of the golf activities and the landscape.
Providing opportunities for other recreation (e.g. fishing) Fishing by members of the local fishing club is unofficially accepted during the hours no golf is played.
