Welsh Golf Clubs Share Sustainable Solutions

Welsh Golf Union Sustainable Solutions Roadshow at Conwy Golf Club 2016Yesterday saw the first of three Golf Course Management and Sustainable Solutions Roadshows get underway in Wales.

 A full house at Conwy golf Club enjoyed interesting and informative presentations from a wide range of speakers including course managers and greenkeepers leading the way in sustainable golf, as well as representatives from GEO (Golf Environment Organization), The Open and BIGGA.

The annual club services roadshows presented by Golf Union Wales, this year focus on the theme Sustainable Solutions. They aim to inspire and inform delegates to enhance the positive social and environmental value of their golf courses, and to gain the benefits of more sustainable operations. Presentations delivered throughout the day focused on four main concepts:

  • Economically viable;
  • Socially Just;
  • Environmentally friendly; and
  • Playing quality  

Dan Farmer from Golf Union Wales hailed the success of the first Roadshow “It has been a great day, a lot of interesting, practical information and interactive discussions. With increasing pressures on all our resources sustainability - economic, environmental and social - is vitally important to every club in Wales. The roadshows have been very welcomed, and the response from delegates today has been very positive. We’re looking forward to continuing these discussions with clubs across the country throughout the week.”

Speakers at the events include Chris Haspell, Links Manager at Castle Stuart Golf Club, which holds the international eco-label GEO Certified®, who sharing his experience, the practicalities and the benefits of sustainable golf course management. Phil Russel, Sustainability Manager at The R&A shared the story of GreenLinks, The Open’s sustainable development programme, and their plans for the future. While Michael Bekken from GEO showcased OnCourse v4, an upgraded online sustainability platform for golf clubs, due to be launched in the new year, designed as a one stop shop for sustainability guidance, reporting, sharing and recognition.

The Sustainable Solutions Roadshows take place this week across Wales: on Tuesday 22nd November at Conwy Golf Club, Wednesday 23rd November at Machynys Peninsula Golf County Club, Llanelli and on Thursday 24th November at  Radyr Golf Club, Cardiff.
