Oman's Al Mouj Golf awarded GEO Certified®
Al Mouj Golf, host venue of the European Challenge Tour’s annual Road to Oman grand final, is the first golf course in the country to achieve the international GEO Certified® accreditation. This independently verified certification for golf facilities shows that the club has committed to sustainable practices in terms of nature conservation, resource efficiency, and community engagement.
Having been designated as an Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary in 2014, Al Mouj Golf then set out to take the next step by achieving the globally recognized GEO Certified® accreditation, becoming one of only three GEO Certified® properties in the region, the other two being The Emirates and The Creek in Dubai. GEO Certified® takes into account performance across nature, resources and community, and commitment to continually improve.
One of the key sustainability practices that Al Mouj Golf was recognized for is its significant efforts to re-naturalize out-of-play areas of the golf course, allowing them to blend in with the desert surroundings, and to conserve biodiversity and natural habitats. This initiative has resulted in an abundance of bird species recorded at the golf course.
Potable water usage at the facility has also been dramatically reduced. 100% of the course’s irrigation needs are now sourced from treated sewage effluent (TSE). Furthermore, a sprinkler head audit reduced water consumption by 100,000m3, saving $28,000 annually.
Al Mouj Golf has also shown a commitment to community engagement, collaborating with Environmental Society of Oman (ESO) in the preparation of golf tournaments, as well as engaging visitors, members and staff in the clubs’ sustainability initiatives. The course also hosted the Fore Autism charity golf days, raising over $100,000 for education and awareness.
Nasser bin Masoud Al Sheibani, CEO, Al Mouj Muscat said: “Al Mouj Muscat is committed to taking practical measures to protect and conserve the environment during the design, construction and operation of its residential properties and amenities. It aims to provide an increasingly eco-friendly solution to those living and visiting Al Mouj Muscat, a key pillar in its journey to becoming a world-class tourist destination and sustainable community.
It is a really big honour to receive this internationally recognised eco-label since it recognises the numerous nature conservation and resource efficiency activities that have been carried out. This certification validates that Al Mouj Golf is not just the number one golf course in Oman, but among the top golf courses in the region and world. We will continue to realize our sustainability goals and promote a shared responsibility for the environment.”
He added, “I must acknowledge and highlight the valuable role, hard work and dedication of the maintenance team and Al Mouj Golf’s Superintendent Steve Johnson in receiving this certification.”
Steve Johnson said, speaking at the Leading Edge sustainability summit hosted recently by Textron Golf: ‘’We're delighted to be recognised for our sustainability work, which plays a key role throughout Al Mouj Resort. Becoming GEO Certified® is a proud moment for our whole team and we can use it as a platform for further success. The process itself was very straightforward and we would definitely encourage other clubs to get OnCourse and GEO Certified”.
