The course is a haven of water, scrub, heather and rough grassland in a heavily industrialised landscape. It is an enhancement of the immediate landscape. It is in an enclosed setting with no long range views outwards, or into the site. The course was created to improve the local landscape.
The RJ National is a somewhat unique course as it is located on a factory site within a vast industrial park. The course comprises 3 holes, a football pitch and a water feature (lake).

This golf facility is making the following efforts to manage the playing quality expectations of customers:
|Establishing clear internal policies for irrigation, fertilization, colour, cutting heights, overseeding etc||Irrigation is only used when needed, this is gauged by weather readings, moisture probe and is only used at night. This is monitored by the Maintenance department on monthly usage and also records are kept by the greenkeeper on a daily basis.|
|Promoting the playing quality values of more naturalized turf, particularly fairways and semi-rough||Allow rough vegetation to wrap around the back of tees and greens.
Over the past few years we have promoted larger areas of naturalised turf on the RJ National, This helps not only to add definition to the course but also allows for less inputs and a more environmentally friendly environment.

Conservation & Enhancement
This golf facility is undertaking the following activities to conserve landscape character:
|Allowing seasonal variation of course coloration and texture||Rough is left to grow so seed heads are prominent.These are maintained by cutting & collecting at the start and end of the season. We have increased our natural rough areas by a large scale.This has allowed us to connect more natural habitats whilst keeping with the natural flow of the golf course.|
|Appropriately matching mowing lines to contours||Areas on the RJ National which have been very difficult to mow without causing damage have now been made into longer rough to obtain better coverage. the mowing frequency has also gone down to just twice a year in these area to promote a healthier turf.|
|Discreet on-course signage and furniture||Introduction of a new 1st tee, This has allowed us to have a larger area of rough and planting of a new hedgerow. Natural wood chip path ways have also been introduced to provide discreet guide around the course.|
|Conservation of specimen trees||Managed to keep all trees on the site that were present prior to the course being built. However to improve standards of grass quality and also to increase natural habitas for bugs and beetles the tree on the 2nd hole has been removed and re-used.|
|Screening and softening unsightly man-made features||Decking on site now screened by bullrushes and by rough being allowed to flourish.
We allow the hedgerow to grow at optimum height and also the rough areas around the border to grow to their potential. This allows a natural border to surround the RJ National. Planting of gorse areas also added.
This golf facility is undertaking the following activities to improve the landscape ecology of the golf course:
|Minimizing the amount of amenity grass||Over the development of the RJ National we have continuously encouraged native grassland, which as a result has created more definition to the playing surfaces and surrounding areas.|
|Increasing the size of habitat patches||RJ national has increased the amount of habitat patches around the ponds, with various bull rushes and longer grass.This has encouraged ducks to nest here and the longer grass has encouraged a better habitat for reptiles.|
|Connection of internal habitat patches||Long rough has been left to grow and natural grasses are flourishing, creating a better habitat for reptiles and insects. Around 300 plus gorse plants have been added to the RJ National in a number of areas and heather regeneration has been encouraged.|
|Connection of patches with external habitats||Over the past couple of years an ATV track has been introduced connecting to the RJ National, This whole site remains untreated chemically and has a natural flow with the RJ National, This has a large heather population and is used and regenaerated on site.|
|Creation of habitat corridors||All of the habitats on the course are connected via gorse plants, long rough,heather beds and log piles. This has created a natural habitat that circles the whole course.|
|Avoidance of habitat fragmentation||Heather disturbed during development has been replanted. Heather is now also beginning to grow naturally around the pond edges. We also have in further development that the heather and gorse areas are increased yearly.|
|Improving and diversifying habitat edges||Habitat edges on the RJ National have all been linked in various ways, using heather, rough, gorse and pond edges to continue habitats all the way round the course.|
|Heather promotion||Heather disturbed during development has been replanted. Heather is now also beginning to grow naturally around the pond edges. Where possible, heather growth is encouraged in and around the course.|
|Introduction of more rough||This is wild grassland that is left to grow throughout the season. It is cut and collected at the start and end of the season, and remains undisturbed for the rest of the year.

|Gorse Planting||Gorse has been largely introduced in set areas of the course that is slowly creating a consistent habitat that circles the whole course and connects all the habitats.|
|Semi Rough||More semi rough has been left to grow as this has created a more gradual definition to the playing surfaces and reduced the amount of cutting required.|
|Man made Habitats||Tree pieces and other natural resources are used to create log piles and other habitats to attract wildlife.|
|Pathways introduced||Pathways have been introduced not only to guide traffic on the course but also by using bark as a base for the paths has created more environments in which reptiles and other wildlife can live.|
This golf facility is undertaking the following activities to improve the quality of habitats on the golf course:
|Creation of botanically rich rough grassland||Plans to introduce a wildflower mix are in the process.|
|Ecologically informed management of scrub vegetation||This is built into the maintenance program to ensure all scrub vegetation and grass areas are maintained to the levels needed.|
|Establishment of littoral shelves and marginal vegetation in wetland areas||We provided a smooth transition between the finely groomed golf course and the adjacent pond by lining the edge with clump grasses. This connected the golf course and the pond into a cohesive interdependent unit.|
|Maintenance of an appropriate balance of open water and aquatic vegetation||The pond has a mixture of open water and Bull rushes. We manage these by moving and replanting the rushes in areas in which they have become overcrowded and also have a plan in place to cut back and trim these as necessary.|
|Naturalization of linear habitats||Surrounding the perimeter as a wildlife link to the RJ National we have a mixture of beech and hawthorn hedging. This acts as a natural barrier to the surrounding factory environment.|
This golf facility is undertaking the following activities to conserve and enhance biodiversity on the golf course:
|Provision of nesting and nectar for pollinators||Heather beds and log piles are a key feature on the golf course for habitats and colour.|

|Control / management of alien species||Cultural practices are built in to our management plan this is to promote a healthy turf sward and soil biology. By doing this we minimise the amount of alien species and pests. Chemical application is used as a last resort.|

The water for the golf course is drawn from an on-site borehole and is pumped a short distance to the course. We have been monitoring our water usage for the course since 2008. Our abstraction consent authorises the use of 6,400 cu.metres per annum for spray irrigation and 3,825 cu. metres per annum for our water feature. Through our day to day management we typically control the combined usage to 3,000 cu.m or less. The only exception to this was in 2011 when we had particularly dry summer resulting in more irrigation and maintenance of the on-course water feature (lake).

This golf facility is undertaking the following activities to maximize irrigation efficiency:
|Selection of grass species||The following criteria were used in the selection process of the turf: aesthetics of the plant, regeneration of the plant, drought tolerance, disease resistance, wear resistance and playing-surface quality.|
|Soil decompaction and thatch management||Renovations completed every spring and autumn to maintain a minimum thatch layer and soil decompaction, this allowing water to move through the profile instead of sitting on the surface.|
|Timing and dose of water application||Completed during the night allowing the water to penetrate the surface reducing evaporation, And only applied as and when needed. No irrigation over the winter months and system is drained down.|

Without a clubhouse, dedicated maintenance area or pro shop, the energy issues for our golf faciltiy apply to the course itself. All machinery, storage and wash down faciltiies come under the company's ISO14001 programme.
On the course we are careful to keep all inputs of machinery, fertilisers, pesticides and water to an absolute minimum. We are aware that all these inputs bring with them a large amount of embodied energy.
As a demonstration tool for our machinery, the course is used to test and promote the latest, most energy efficient and low emitting turf care machinery, including electric, solar and hybrid technology. As a manufacturer serving the golf industry, we are constantly looking to implement environmental innovations for our equipment - and feedback often starts on the course.

|Encouraging drought and disease tolerant grasses||All grass species have been selected carefully with high tolerances for draught and disease. These are carefully maintained and the original grass species are held. Also overseeding with the original seed mixes takes place throughout the year. An application of wetting agent is delivered on a monthly basis to greens and tees. This strengthens the turf against dry patch, making the turf more resiliant. Disease checks on all areas of the RJ National are undertaken on a daily basis and fungicide is only applied when necessary.|
|Managing stress and wear||The RJ national is only playable by visitors on site, so therefore wear is at a minimum. Due to a cutting and rolling programme RJ National cutting heights of the tees and greens were raised(4mm to 5mm on Greens and 11mm to 14mm on Tees). Records allow us to pinpoint disease hotspots of the year.|

Land Use & Cultural Heritage
This golf facility provides access and diversified land use for others through:
|Creation of new paths and nature trails||A ATV Track has now been installed on the RJ National grounds, where pathways and natural vegetation are being restored and also new bark pathways on the golf course have been introduced.|
|Installation of effective and welcoming signage||Plans are being put together to maybe introduce a sign for the RJ National located on the first tee area.|
|Providing opportunities for other recreation (e.g. fishing)||A football pitch located on site adjacent to the RJ National is used on Monday nights by employees in the summer months and also holds our yearly football tournament in which visiting teams participate.|

This golf facility undertakes the following internal environmental communications:
|Provision of newsletters, notice boards & poster display||Plans for a newsletter to be applied on a quarterly basis to inform all Ransomes Jacobsen staff of the work that is being carried out on the RJ National. These will then be placed on the noticed boards throughout the company and also sent via email.|
|Members evenings and course walks||Course walks are held by the Greenkeeper on a weekly basis and this contributes to over 1000 visitors a year to the RJ National.|
|Video Blog||Video blogs are carried out on a six monthly basis to give an insight into the running of the RJ National and posted via company website and YouTube.|
|Employee Competitions||Golf Day and 5-a-side football tournament held annually|
|Family Open Day & Dealer Open Days||Run on annual basis for promotion of course and products|
