The sustainable work at Viborg GK started when the municipality wanted to close down the club. As being the land owner the municipality has the right to do this and the reason for the wish was that the municipality had a notion that the club was polluting the area with pesticides and fertilizers. The club was simply forced to show figures. It did that, the municipality was calmed, and from that moment Viborg GK has been one of the frontrunners of sustainability work at golf clubs in Denmark. The club is constantly trying to decrease its negativ…

Nature

Viborg Golf Course is located east of Viborg on Sønderhede in a hilly moraine landscape close to the edge of the last ice age’s glacial line at a level ranging from 22 to 50 m above sea level. The area is on three sides surrounded by distinctive river valleys formed during the last ice age. North-westerly at a distance of approximately 1 km a valley including the lakes of Viborg is located - to the southwest at a distance of about ½ km lays the river valley where Søndermøller Å (Mølleå) which drains the lakes near Viborg, is located. To the east at a distance no more than ½ km the Nørreådal runs which extends in an easterly direction. At the course there are several places with magnificent sights of the river valley.

The landscape is former agricultural land with fields in the cultivable land and forests and small groves on the more sloping land. Much was formerly covered with moor according to maps from 1842 to 1899. Some of these areas are either transformed to forest or has been planted which can be seen on maps from 1928 – 1940. The land is now covered with deciduous forests and grasslands of different nature with mainly oak and an undergrowth of bushes like honeysuckle.

The soil consists of sandy clay. Hollows bogs are formed which has previously been either cultivated or used for peat cutting which can be seen on old maps. Today a number of lakes are established either by trenching or by damming and regulation of water.

When preparing this application for certification according to the GEO's standard, we have initiated a collaboration with the local department of The Danish Society for Nature Conservation (Danmarks Naturfredningsforening) which has developed a description and assessment of landscape and flora. The assessment includes a number of proposals for actions on the course. We expect this cooperation to continue in the future in form of regular consultations and assessment of the impact of actions and proposals for new projects.

Habitats & Designations

This golf facility does not feature any landscape designations.

Area of habitats / vegetation types, and associated designations at this golf facility:

Title Estimated Area (Hectares) Designation
Rough 'ecological' grassland 7 ha None
Non Native Plantation Woodland 3 None
Open Water Features 1 None

Turfgrass

Size and estimated species composition of amenity turfgrass maintained at this golf facility.

Estimated Area (Hectares) Turfgrass Species Sward Composition (%)
Greens 2.5 Hectares Agrostis tenuis / capillaris 50%
Poa annua 40%
Tees 1.0 Hectares Agrostis tenuis / capillaris 50%
Lolium perenne 25%
Fairways 13.8 Hectares Agrostis tenuis / capillaris 60%
Poa annua 20%
Semi Rough 22.0 Hectares Agrostis tenuis / capillaris 70%
Poa annua 15%

These turfgrasses are optimal for the circumstances at this club because:
Our 27 old holes are up to 35 years old having push up greens. We have tried to top-dress and aerate very intensively to reduce poa annua but after 15 years we have only seen minor changes, but we continue trying to overseed the old greens and spare the cost of constructing new. We irrigate as seldom as possible and use as small amount of fertilizer as possible but until we have the financial capacity to construct new greens, we can do nothing else. Fairways have more or less the same problem. We overseed with fescue and bent grasses to try to change the composition but the structure of greens and fairways makes it difficult.

On our 9 new USGA spec holes we have brown top bent and fescue grasses and as a consequence we use very small amount of water, fertilizer and pesticides.

This golf facility assesses mowing patterns every: 12 months

This golf facility consults the following individuals / organizations regarding its grassing plan:

  • Asbjørn Nyholt

This golf facility is making the following efforts to manage the playing quality expectations of customers:

Activity Description
Establishing clear internal policies for irrigation, fertilization, colour, cutting heights, overseeding etc We irrigate and feed minimally to increase the amount of amount of bent and fescue. We aerate and top dress frequently to obtain the desired sward composition of bents and fescues, besides we Increase cutting heights outside the growing season to reduce stress on the plant.
Promoting the playing quality values of more naturalized turf, particularly fairways and semi-rough We do not irrigate the fairways and semi-rough and the colour of the course except greens and tees have seasonal variations.
Promoting the financial benefits of presenting sustainable surfaces We have been working to try to reduce the consumption of fertilizer, pesticides and water for 15 years. We have calculated, that if we used the same amount of these products as before we started the process our expenses would be in the order of 100.000 kr. higher each year that the expenses we have today.
Improving customer understanding around greens maintenance The course manager send out mails in advance explaining the ongoing work of the greenkeeping team and in particular to disruptive greens work like hollow coring etc.

Conservation & Enhancement

This golf facility is undertaking the following activities to conserve landscape character:

Activity Description
Allowing seasonal variation of course coloration and texture As we water greens and tees as seldom as possible and do not water fairways at all greens will be hard in the summer and fairways will change colour according to the amount of rainfall. We consider this as part of the challenges and experiences playing our course.
Appropriately matching mowing lines to contours We regularly assess the mowing lines according to adjustments and new constructions on each hole and adjust the mowing lines to underline the character and challanges at each hole.
Discreet on-course signage and furniture We use the same constructions as used by the national forestry and in accordance with national legislation.
Conservation of specimen trees According to our management plan we cut down trees not natural the region and plant only trees that can be found in the near surroundings of the course.

This golf facility is undertaking the following activities to improve the landscape ecology of the golf course:

Activity Description
Minimizing the amount of amenity grass We water as seldom as possible and use the least amount of fertilizer as possible. Besides we aerate, topdress and plant bent and fescue intensively.
Increasing the size of habitat patches We have constructed a number of beetle dikes and plant the open areas with trees natural for the region.
Connection of internal habitat patches We plant trees natural for our region in the rough and we only cut the rough 2-3 times each year.
Connection of patches with external habitats The the fauna-report the internal and external patches are described and we conduct a number of initiatiative i.e. planting trees to strength the connection between internal and external patches.
Creation of habitat corridors The the fauna-report the internal and external patches are described and we conduct a number of initiatiative i.e. planting trees to strength the connection between internal and external patches.
Avoidance of habitat fragmentation In the fauna-report the internal and external patches are described and we conduct a number of initiatiative i.e. planting trees to strength the connection between internal and external patches.
Improving and diversifying habitat edges We have conducted a project in coorperation with the municipality of Viborg reducing the amount of trees and bushes around our lakes. Besides we have designed better lakeshores around several of our lakes.

This golf facility is undertaking the following activities to improve the quality of habitats on the golf course:

Activity Description
Promoting species and structurally diverse woodlands We cut down trees that are not natural for our region and leave most of our major forrest without management.
Establishment of littoral shelves and marginal vegetation in wetland areas We have removed most of the trees around our lakes and have constructed the littoral shelves according to recommendations in our fauna-report.
Maintenance of an appropriate balance of open water and aquatic vegetation We have removed most of the trees around our lakes and have planted equatic vegetion common for our region along the shores.

This golf facility is undertaking the following activities to conserve and enhance biodiversity on the golf course:

Activity Description
Provision of nesting and nectar for pollinators We have mounted more than 150 nesting boxes on the course. Besides we have introduces beehives.
Installation of nest boxes We have mounted more than 150 nesting boxes for starling and blue tit on the course.
Provision of feeding tables We have mounted stones containing minerals for roe deers.
Control / management of alien species We cut down trees not natural for our region and plant only trees and bushes that can be found around the course.
Creation of micro-habitats (eg log and stone piles) We have constructed and maintaines a number of beetle dikes on the course.

Water

We use public water in the clubhouse and for drinking water on the course. Water for irrigation comes from our own groundwater drilling. We have installed a fully modern and automatic irrigation system and we only irrigate during the night. We irrigate only greens and tees and only when needed. We are constantly trying to reduce the water consumption and we have managed to reduce water for irrigation in 2014 to 56% of our consumption in 1996.

Energy

We have new and modern machinery which primarily run on diesel. We assume therefore that we use as little fuel as possible with our current level of maintance. Since we have constructed the new 9 holes we have seen a slight decrease in energy consumption although we use more water for irrigation. The reason for that is that we simultaneously fitted modern and energy-saving pumps. We have replaced most light bulbs to energy saving bulbs. We follow our energy consumption closely using secondary meters. We thought that our main consumption was our irrigation system, but our new secondary meters have shown that our main consumption is the club house. We are at the moment evaluating the results to initiative initiatives to reduce the energy consumption in the club house.

We have had the Energicentret (Energy Center Viborg) to review the clubhouse and have implemented all projects having a payback time of less than 3 years.

In Denmark it is a legal requirement to have an assessment of all workplaces if there are more than 6 employees. Legislative commitment includes an assessment of the chemicals found on the workplace and to set up guidelines for how accidents are prevented and what should happen if an accident were to occur. Viborg Golf Club has made such an assessment of the workplace and all relevant chemicals including pesticides. This assessment is evaluated by the relevant authority and found to comply with regulations. Viborg Golf Club has made appropriate efforts to prevent incidents and have a readiness in case of accident. There has never been an accident which has made it necessary to do a statutory reporting.

Viborg Golf Club has for more than 10 years been very open about the environmental impact from maintaining the course. The environmental work in the club has been presented at several seminars organized by the Danish Golf Association as an example of how to be open about environmental matters.

Community

Viborg Golf Club offers membership to city residents, which in addition to the golf, gives each member a lot of exercise and fresh air.

Major archaeological investigations were conducted prior to the tender and construction work on the 9 new holes in 2005. We were well aware that there are a very large number of findings particularly from the Bronze Age, which was confirmed by the studies. It was therefore a requirement when constructing the 9 new holes that works could not be carried out under the plough layer. A number of important findings from the Bronze Age and early Iron Age have been found in and around the course. The area is therefore of great importance to national and even international level. Viborg Stift Museum (the museum in Viborg) has praised Viborg Golf Club for their cooperation when constructing the new holes.

We have regular consultations with the municipality of Viborg

At least once a year we carry out a review in the field of track including the immediate surroundings. During the review we determine the maintenance of the planting for the next period.

We have started a cooperation with the local museum to secure and point out the heritage on and close to the course.

Viborg Golf Club has completed a green account every year since 1997. The green account has in all these years included an environmental policy besides objectives and targets for reduction of use of the main polluting substances. The accounts have been open to the public throughout this period (it has been on the website since 2004) and is a topic at the annual general meeting.

Danmarks Naturfredningsforening has conducted an assessment of the course and its immediate surroundings. We expect that this will be the start of a future collaboration with regular consultations.
