Le golf de la Sainte Baume fut l’un des premiers parcours de Golf établi par la famille Boissonnas au sein de la chaîne Open Golf Club. Clients et visiteurs, ayant un intérêt pour la faune et la flore, ont de grandes possibilités de vivre de nouvelles expériences en milieu naturel puisque le parcours de golf fait partie intégrante d’une région boisée à proximité du “Parc Naturel Régional du Verdon”.
Au golf de la Sainte Baume, nous rechercherons, au cours des deux prochaines années, les meilleures façons de faire coexister l’homme et la nature. Nous souhaitons que vous puissiez voir et expérimenter de nouvelles plantes ou animaux lorsque vous vous rendrez sur le parcours.
Aujourd’hui en jouant au golf de la Sainte Baume, vous trouverez différentes plantes provenant de différents endroits du monde comme les bambous (Asie), eucalyptus (Australie), pins et chênes. Les deux dernières sont des arbres natifs de la région. Ces plantes sont à feuilles caduques c'est-à-dire qu’elles perdent leurs feuilles en hiver. Cette stratégie de survie révèle qu’elles sont originaires de climats froids à tempérés. Elles jouent un rôle important dans l’établissement d’habitats pour les insectes et autres animaux dans leurs différents écosystèmes. Dans notre partie du monde, il peut y avoir d’importante différence en fonction de l’espèce de plantes. Sur un vieux chêne, vous pouvez trouver plus de 500 espèces différentes d’animaux, mais sur un eucalyptus il y en a seulement approximativement 10.
Le parcours est exposé à un climat engendrant un changement de coloration saisonnière tout au long de l’année. Le charme de cette nature sera accentué en gardant une large variété de plantes et arbres avec différentes façons de s’adapter au climat de la Sainte Baume. Le golf est connu pour son terrain vallonné et ces différents obstacles d’eau avec leur propre écologie, départs et greens surélevés. Au cours de votre partie, vous apercevrez en arrière plan une époustouflante vue sur l’arrête de montagne du massif de la Sainte Baume.

Golf de la Sainte Baume was one of the first golf courses established in the Open Golf Club chain by the family Boissonnas. Customers and visitors with wildlife interest will have good possibilities for having new nature experiences because the golf course is an integrated part of the open woodland being close neighbor to the “Parc Naturel Regional du Verdon”.
At the Sainte Baume, we will in the next two year be looking into ways that man and nature will find better ways to co-exist. We want you to be able to see and experience new plants and animals when you go for a tour on the golf course. One of our objectives is to let nature play a larger role, for increasing the values and pleasure when visiting the golf.
When playing at the Sainte Baume today, you will find many different plants from all over the world, e.g. bamboo (Asia), eucalyptus (Australia) and pine and oak trees. The last two are original native trees. These plants are deciduous, that is to say, they lose their leaves in the winter. This survival strategy reveals that they have originated from cold to temperate climates. They play a very important role in establishing habitats for insects and other animals in their different ecosystems. There is great difference though in their status as important in our part of the world. On an old oak you are able to find more than 500 different species of animals, but an eucalyptus have only approximately 10!
The golf course is exposed to a climate that gives a change in seasonal coloring throughout the year. This fine spell of nature will be nurtured by keeping a wide variety of plants with different ways to adapt to climate at the Sainte Baume. The Golf is known for its hilly terrain and different water obstacles with their own ecology, raised tees and greens. You have got the astonishing view to the magnificent mountain ridge of the Baume Massif as background when playing.

These turfgrasses are optimal for the circumstances at this club because:
For our greens we use Bent (Agrostis stolonifera) because this turf grows well. It needs much less water, fertilizer and is less sensitive to diseases than Poa annua. We hoped that Bent can stress and outperform the invasive Poa.
We use Hard fescue (Festuca trachphylla) on our Fairways. It shows good growth abilities and gets quickly green and uses 10-15% less water than Poa.
For our Tees and Semi Rough we use Festuca trachyphylla and Lolimmus perenne, which has shown strong playing abilities.

Promoting the playing quality values of more naturalized turf, particularly fairways and semi-rough We wish that the forest and the surrounding areas gradually change into a more natural looking area where nature and culture go hand in hand and let the nature recover to a more original level. One action is to stimulate the undergrowth of the forest that will increase its density and biodiversity. We will look into ways to reduce the need for cutting grass that obey rough and semi rough conditions to minimize the use of energy and time for moving grass and leave space for plants and animals, of course without changing the quality of the game.
Promoting the financial benefits of presenting sustainable surfaces We do not use any pesticides or fertilizers on our roughs. These areas will grow more weeds but this condition doesn’t affect the beauty of the course nor the playing quality..
Improving customer understanding around greens maintenance A newsletter is every month sent to our members from the Sainte Baume. It contains a final section on raising awareness to the golf course and what is needed to maintain a good quality golf course. Articles and explanations on areas such as aeration, mechanical work as vertical cutting, and types of turf are also to be found. We will now use our newsletter and our web-site to communicate the GEO activities.
Demonstrating the direct relationship between environmental best practice and year round high quality playing surfaces Much of the work, that our turf management are doing day are touching the environmental best practice. We are looking forward to demonstrate the relationship to high quality playing surfaces within the up coming process.

Conservation & Enhancement

This golf facility is undertaking the following activities to conserve landscape character:

Allowing seasonal variation of course coloration and texture One trade mark of our golf course is the trees and the changing colors. Our policy is substituting not native with native trees.
Appropriately matching mowing lines to contours We use the natural changes in the topography and the lines from the Massif. Which from the beginning of the golf course has been the important trademark of the Sainte Baume.
Protection and restoration of historic features At the lane 6, you will be able to see and walk on an ancient, well preserved, Roman road. It is more that 1000 year old! We are aware of our historical responsibility in protecting this inheritance. We have not got the competences in our organization, but will seek local organizations as for our customers that will be able to supply us with information’s on how ot preserve this historic features.
Discreet on-course signage and furniture We use natural looking furniture as for our new dry biodegradable toilets on-course that is sourced from a sustainable supplier to include: signage, concession stations, club and ball cleaning equipment and waste recycling points.
Conservation of specimen trees For our specimen trees we are on our way to undertake regular tree inspections to favor rice their management requirement and further development.
Screening and softening unsightly man-made features Man-made features are screened with planting such as irrigation pump house as the new maintenance facility building are covered with wood from sustainable grown trees. The clubhouse is visible from the entrance roadway in but well screened from the north side of the course.

Connection of patches with external habitats With the re-profiling of the river banks this has allowed for river marginal plantings to migrate further up into the river banks, and make connection with some wildflower mitigation areas we have created during the renovation projects as suggested by our Environment Agency.

Water

Le Golf de la Sainte Baume est situé dans une région boisée ouverte avec très peu d'obstacles vallonnés. L'eau utilisée pour l’arrosage est exclusivement de l'eau de surface fournie par les plateaux environnants rassemblés dans le Canal de la Provence. Du Canal de la Provence, l’eau est pompée dans notre réservoir (5000 m3) où nous baissons le niveau de bicarbonate et augmentons légèrement la température afin d’en améliorer la qualité. Pour l’arrosage l'eau est pompée directement jusqu’au parcours. Notre station de pompage est située près du trou N°2 et possède une capacité de pompage de 80 m3/h. Si nécessaire nous pouvons régler la pression de 5 jusqu'à 12 bars. Nous couvrons maintenant 90 % du terrain de golf par des arroseurs de grande qualité dans le but d’améliorer notre système d'irrigation. Le dessin du parcours est tel que l'eau est déplacée rapidement des surfaces de jeux (Fairways et semi rough) à des espaces plus éloignés où elle est maintenue dans des rigoles et creux avant d’être relâchée lentement et capturée dans les canaux de drainage la menant à notre réservoir. Ce processus lent est aussi fait pour empêcher l'érosion et la décharge de dépôt excessive dans les cours d’eau et ruisseaux locaux. L'eau de pluie est récupérée du parking et des toits des différents bâtiments dans le système de drainage local. L'eau potable est fournie par l'entreprise - Veolia Eau, au Club House et au local des jardiniers mais les consommations sont jusqu'à présent indissociées. Un changement s’opérera quand le nouveau bâtiment de maintenance sera terminé en fin d’année et nous tiendrons compte d’enregistrements de consommation d’eau séparés. Pour nettoyer leurs machines, l'eau non potable est utilisée. Les eaux usées des bâtiments entrent dans le système de traitement des eaux usées de la municipalité local.

The Sainte Baume is placed in open woodland with not that many hilly obstacles. Water for irrigation is 100% surface water which is supplied from the surrounding plateaus collected in the Canal de Provence. From the Canal de Provence it is pumped into our reservoir (5000 m3) where we lower the bicarbonate level and raise the temperature just a little to improve water quality. When irrigating water it pumped directly onto the course. Our pumping station is placed near lane 2 and has got a pumping capacity of 80 m3/h. We are able to regulate pressure from 5 up to 12 bars if needed. We now cover 90% of the golf course by high quality sprinklers as we keep improving our irrigation system. The design of the golf course is such that water is moved quickly from the playing surfaces (fairways and semi rough) away from the play areas where it is held in swales and hollows before slowly being released and captured in the drainage channels that lead the water back into our reservoir. This slow process is also done to prevent erosion and undue sediment discharge to the on-course stream and local creeks. Rain water from the entrance road, the car park and the roofs of the different buildings is released in the local drainage system. Drinking water is supplied from the company - Veolia Eau, to the Clubhouse and the maintenance building and the consumption has until now been measured on the same meter. This will change when the new maintenance building is ready to use in the end of the season allowing for separate registration of water consumption. Waste water from the buildings goes in the local municipal waste water treatment system.

This golf facility is undertaking the following activities to maximize irrigation efficiency:

Activity Description
Selection of grass species We work towards changing the percentages of water consuming turfs to less consuming turfs. Especially Bent, Hard and Rye Grass, which are also less sensitive towards disease.
Soil decompaction and thatch management The field team has got their routines in decompacting all our fairways each year. Loosening up the earth allows recourses like fertilizers to be used better and it reduces the need for irrigation. The greens and tees are aired three times a year. These operations allow us to fight dry patches and it also gives better conditions for stimulating gas exchanges. Every week, from April to October, the greens are vertical cut to counteract the entanglement on the greens.
Timing and dose of water application Irrigation starts from March until October. This is done only at night. It is automated via Rainbird software to control our consumption and strive for efficiency of our system.
Analysis of soil moisture We are aware that our irrigations system has got new ways for development, different probes for measuring moisture amongst others. We will be looking into cost beneficial models in order to improve our performance and move towards the best environmental practice.
Incorporation of evapotranspiration rates and weather data By analyzing the weather forecast and the conditions on the course of daily checks the Green Keeper and his team adjust the water irrigation system to prevent over watering and still provide sufficient water for the plants.
Overall reduction in irrigated area We only irrigate half of the available surface. Our focus is made effectively on sensitive gaming areas (primarily Greens and tees). We are also exposed to restrictions in irrigation set by the local governments.
Targeting of sprinkler heads All our sprinklers have adaptable nozzles that are selected for each specific need. We adjust the sprinklers independently in order to cover the individual shape of each of the greens. We have got an ongoing research to find optimized configuration for the greens, this on central element of our water management action plan.
Optimizing system pressure Sprinkler heads are all automatic pressure regulated. We use local sprinkler pressure control as for having the possibility of regulating water pressure up to 12 bars.
Adoption of cutting edge nozzle technology Each year the entire sprinkler system is maintained and updated with the latest technologies, including cutting edges nozzles.

This golf facility is undertaking the following activities to conserve / reduce / minimize water consumption:

Activity Description
Low-flow urinals and toilets Two dry toilets are provided on the course. They use no water or electricity, and natural ventilation is part of this concept. Toilets in the club house and the maintenance building are with small and large flush.
Use of water efficient appliances We use for example a high pressure jet for cleaning our cars and machines, rather than a manual water hose.
Repairing leaks We repair our leaks when detected upon abnormal water consumption or indirectly from the detection of a drop in pressure or directly from a leak. We use local plumbers.
Water awareness signage Signage and signals for better use of water will be communicated in our newletter and places where water is used.

Energy

L'approvisionnement énergétique des installations du golf est couvert par la source d'énergie utilisée classiquement en région PACA, délivrée par EDF (le fournisseur d'énergie national français), c’est-à-dire l'électricité produite dans des turbines d'eau en Suisse et dans des centrales nucléaires à Lyon. L'électricité des turbines d'eau suisses représente 14.4 % de notre achat d'électricité, mais nous souhaiterions augmenter ce pourcentage de tarification verte. Nous sommes conscients de la grande perte d'énergie due aux transformateurs atténuant le transport d'électricité sur ces grandes distances. Aussi nous examinerons les possibilités de produire l'électricité localement comme par exemple le photovoltaïque ou panneaux solaires combinés probablement avec une petite éolienne. En outre nous examinerons les possibilités d'installer un système de chaleur géothermique pour assurer un chauffage local et durable de nos bâtiments. Notre système de chauffage actuel est une pompe à chaleur électrique qui refroidit en été et chauffe en hiver.

Il y a beaucoup de lumière naturelle dans le Club House à travers les grandes fenêtres du salon principal et du restaurant. Des capteurs de lumière ont été installés où cela semblait possible et des ampoules économiques en électricité (LED) seront installées par exemple dans notre nouvel atelier.

The energy supply to the golf course facilities covers classical energy source in the region PACA, delivered by EDF (french national energy supplier), e.g. electricity made from water turbines in Switzerland and from nuclear plants in Lyon. The electricity from the Suiss water turbines comprises 14.4 % of our purchase of electricity, but we would like to increase the percentage of green tariff supply. We are aware of the large loss of energy through the transformer stations mitigating the transport of electricity over those large distances. Also we will investigate the possibilities of producing electricity locally e.g. by photovoltaic or solar panels perhaps combined with a small scale wind turbine. Furthermore we will investigate the possibilities of installing a geothermal heat system to ensure local and sustainable heating of our buildings. Our current heating system is an electricity consuming heat pump that cools in the summer and heat in the winter.

There is a lot of natural light in the clubhouse coming through the large windows in the main lounge and dining area. Light sensors have been installed where possible and light saving light bulbs (LED) are being installed for example in our new maintenance building.

Energy Efficiency

This golf facility is undertaking the following activities to diversify energy and fuel supply:

Activity Description
Adoption of green tariff grid supply When buying electricity from EDF (French energy supplier). We already take in 14,4% electricity that are produced sustainable. We will look into new and alternative ways for buying green tariff.
Installation of photovoltaic and / or solar panels We will look into means of how to implement a photo voltaic electricity productions site.
Use of geothermal and / or ground sources We are already using a modern head pump system on our clubhouse it produces warmth in the winter and coolness in the summer.
Use of biodiesel and /or ethanol Diesel used in lawn mowing machines is called GNR (Gazoil Non Routier). It contains 15% percentage of biofuel (Rapeoil).
Use of electric hybrid vehicles The mowers for the greens are hybrid machines (fuel, electricity). Those mowers have reduced the fuel consumption by 20% from before and limited the risk of hydraulic leaks.

This golf facility is undertaking the following activities to reduce energy consumption:

Activity Description
Investment in low-energy heating and air conditioning systems Five years ago on our Club house, we installed reversible air conditioner; it uses the heat pump principles. It produces warmth in the winter and coolness in the summertime. Before the investment, we had only electric heaters and air conditioner. With the installation of the heat pump our electricity consumption has been reduced significantly.
Operating instructions are given from the management, to be used with closure of the doors to prevent energy loss.
Optimizing thermostat levels for heating and refrigeration We have good annual inspections from specialists like the refrigeration mechanic for the air conditioner and the cold room in the kitchen. We have always attentions towards doing better in our energy performance.
Upgrading of building insulation Our new maintenance facilities have been designed to live up to modern standards of being better insulation and double sheeted glass for the windows.
Use of natural light (e.g. sunlight pipes) Most of our clubhouse has entire floor to ceiling windows to maximize the use of natural light.
Installation of low-energy lighting Old classical light bulbs have been replaced 10 year ago with low energy ones. Now we replace them with LED light and see the great advantage LED has got. It gives much better quality of light and possibilities of illuminating different things and not least important have cut our electricity use for lights with 70%!
Use of motion sensor lighting Motion sensors for lightings are used every where it makes sense.
Use of timers with appliances, heating and lighting External lighting uses motion sensors for turning on when the sun light goes to a low intensity. Timers are also installed for giving lights in the dressing room..
Educating staff and customers The management asks all staff to turn off lights when leaving rooms where lights are no more needed, or when natural light is sufficient. We turn off the heat in the afternoon and use natural ventilation rather than air conditioning mechanics.

We at the Golf de la Sainte Baume are part of the French golf chain ‘The Open Golf Club’ which has implemented a purchasing policy that all their golf courses must live up to.
Our purchasing policy is based on the visions from the Open Golf Club where new innovative methods are used in a close collaboration with our suppliers to change our procurement and processes to be more sustainable.
Being an attractive venue with high customer expectations we try to source high quality products for use across the board. Also for the office activities sustainability is included. Printers are for example set by default to print black and white and staff are encouraged to print all internal documents in black and white and double sided.

Use of local suppliers For the design and the construction of our new maintenance building, we have only used local work forces and craftsmen and the architect is also local. We know that it costs a little extra than using foreign companies but having a good relationship to the local community is very important for us as well as stimulating the local economy. We find that in the end choosing local suppliers is better business.
Use of local products Sand for top dressing is supplied by the closest location available that meets the particle size and shape specification. It is bought in bulk rather than bags so there is no polythene waste to dispose.
Selection of certified products We know that selecting certified products, often is the very best guarantee for quality and sustainable products. That is also why we for the new maintenance building have chosen certified wood to cover the exterior surfaces of the building.
Use of recycled and recyclable products Despite of intensions of re-cycling all plant materials in compost, we will look into ways how we can elaborate more recycling also by choosing the right products.
Use of accredited suppliers (e.g. ISO 14001) When choosing suppliers we priorities’ suppliers with ISO 14001 certification.

Turfgrass Inputs

This golf facility undertakes the following IPM activities:

Activity Description
Encouraging drought and disease tolerant grasses We have introduced Bent (Agrostis Strolonifera) to our greens with the purpose of using less water for irrigation and get a more disease tolerant grass cover, but having the invasive Poa annua, it gives us serious challenges to overcome. Our fairways’ are mainly made up of Hard fescus (Festuca trachyphylla) it shows good drought and salt tolerance and has shown good growth abilities and resistant over illnesses on our fairways. Ray grass that we use for our tees has shown strong abilities to keep the tees in good conditions.
Managing stress and wear Our three strong grass species that we use at the Golf de la Sainte Baume are chosen because they can withstand stress. We oversee our semi rough with ray grass to avoid wear.
Enhancement of soil structure Aeration of greens are done 3 times per year. Tees are aerated 2 times a year and supplied with topdressing.
We unpack our fairways once a year to facilitate the assimilation of fertilizers, water and oxygen.

Optimization of the growing environment We use a controlled fertilization with slow-release fertilizer (no peak grows). This is given 3-4 times per year for fairways and every 6 weeks for the greens and tees at low doses.
Managing thatch levels The greens are aerated three times annually; it results in decreasing the felt coupled with vertical cutting actions (1 times a week from March to November depending on the weather).
Managing surface moisture Watering early in the morning just a few minutes brings down the dew and allows it to be absorbed by the soil.
Establishing thresholds for pests and disease The course team (Green keeper and his assistant) analyses the impact of pests and diseases on the plant development. The treatment will be based on the inconvenience for the game and or the plants, but we rater wait and monitor the development before using drastic methods.
Scouting for pests and diseases Scouting for pests and diseases is part of the daily management of our green keeping team and our members. Photographs are taken to monitoring and verify the development of the disease.
Soil analyses are carried out every three years for a medium-term monitoring of the course.
Monitoring / improvement of plant health As our field team are instructed in having close attention on our plants health and development we most often are able to reduce a disease before it gets out of hand.

This golf facility undertakes the following actions to optimize pesticide use:

Activity Description
Selection on the least toxic and lest persistent products As mentioned earlier the turf management strategy at the Golf de la Sainte Baume is to reduce the amount of toxins used both qualitative and quantitative. We have introduced MYC 4000, a spore that grows in a symbiotic relation with the turf roots and this enhances the uptake of nutrients enabling the turf to grow better. This will undoubtedly also result in fewer diseases as a healthy growing turf is more resistant.
Spot-treatment with handheld sprayers and wipers As we hardly use any pesticides, when used we use handheld sprayers to make the treatment as precise as possible.
Calibration and testing of sprayers When using our large unit for spraying herbicides’, solutions are mixed in the sprayer when used. Meaning we do not carry a large volume of mixed chemicals, but only water, which then are mixed when sprayed. That way we reduce the amount of used chemicals. The sprayer is calibrated before use to ensure the right dose of chemicals used. On our large spraying units special anti-dripping nozzles made of ceramics are used. We then don’t have problems with aerosol or brume behind the vessel.
Non-chemical weed control The use of MYC 4000 is one of our first new initiatives stimulating a better turf growth by using the fertilizers better. We believe that a healthy growing turf becomes less sick and we thus use fewer chemicals.
Use of organic and biological products to improve plant health and resistance. We use nematodes to reduce the problem with the leatherjacket caterpillars. From our environmental consultant we have obtained new treatment methods that we will try out. Furthermore we have asked our supplier of fertilizers to make us calculations on the cost for shifting from inorganic to organic fertilizers.

Returning clipping to fairways and walkways We are already leaving our clipping on the fairways, and it is only from the tees and greens the clipping is collected. We are looking into ways to compost the materials and return them as valuable fertilizers.

Only small quantities of pesticides are kept on site to avoid products going out of date or damaged by weather. The agents are seldom used because we aim to avoid them by using alternatives like biological control agents.
The drainage system to the golf course was designed to cope with flood and minimize erosion and release of sediments into the local creek. The fairways are shaped in such a manner as to get the water off the surface and move it into the integrated creek system and out of play areas. This is done without increasing the amount of drains leaving the site or the diameter of the existing pipes.

Pollution Prevention

This golf facility undertakes the following activities to prevent pollution from its maintenance facility and clubhouse:

Storage of equipment and hazardous products on covered, sealed impervious areas Only two people, the head green keeper and chef gardener, have got access to this room. Fertilizers are stored under a pent roof. The head green keeper has made drawings and he knows how our new washing station must be made to skim off grass and oil. Actions of additional waste water treatment for eliminating residual auxiliary products from the waste water are being implemented.
Maintenance of equipment on covered, sealed impervious areas In the daily work we are conscious of not polluting the environment. Maintenance of our equipments is carried out in the workshop our washing place using an oil separator. Our new workshop is in a closed building covered with waterproof flooring.
Mixing of pesticides and fertilizers in covered areas An enclosed cabinet containing all the auxiliary products. The spray preparation is carried out on a sealed area.
Mixing of pesticides and fertilizers over impervious surfaces Chemicals are mixed directly when needed on the sprayer, to minimize the use of chemicals. In the new maintenance building pesticides will be stored on an impervious area as for all of our solid fertilizers (we use no liquid fertilizers).
Installation of above-ground fuel tanks Fuel is stored in a 4000 l double walled tank with specific gasoline leak detector. The distribution is carried out by a gas pump on a sealed area with collection and separation of hydrocarbons.

Provision of containment booms and absorbent materials Emergency equipment including different absorbent materials, and liquid active carbon solution and other materials are available whenever chemicals are handled, the crew is well trained in using the materials in the case of an emergency involving auxiliary products.

Establishment of vegetative buffer strips around water bodies Each body of water is surrounded by rough in minimum 6 meter from water surfaces.
Establishment of emergency spillage response plan We have always absorbent materials with us on the sprayer. People know what to and will use our chain of command, if the accident should happen. But with our system of "mix just before use", this risk is considerable minimized.
Controlling erosion and sediment discharge All areas of the course are covered with grass or planted with trees or bushes to prevent erosion. The maintenance of the rivers is conducted annually to ensure optimal water flow.
Establishment of pesticide-free zones No use of pesticides on areas of roughs, semi rough, fairways and tees.

The use of plant protection products are minimized on the greens. The whole crew is doing daily examination on the turf and the mechanical work on the turf reduces chemical treatment.

Nous promouvons continuellement les meilleures pratiques environnementales à notre personnel, aussi bien le personnel à plein temps que celui à temps partiel, par des consignes ou rappels sur le recyclage : des déchets alimentaires, du papier mais également concernant les huiles ou les sols..
Les consignes encouragent le personnel à éteindre les équipements électriques dès lors qu’ils ne sont pas utilisés. Des poubelles et des boîtes pour le tri-sélectif sont fournies par la municipalité pour recycler le verre, le papier ou carton.

We continually promote the best environmental practice to our staff, both full time and part time staff, with ongoing reminders to recycle, from food waste and paper to oils and soils. Notices encourage staff to turn off electrical equipment when not in use and bins and boxes are provided for recycling bottles, cans and paper.

Storage, application and disposal of pesticides Only the green keeper and his assistant have got access to the storage room and it is only their team who use the chemicals, as they have got the proper education.
Informal training as for formal courses is given to people in charge.
Efficient water management With our up-dated irrigation system (Rainbird) and the knowledge from our green keeper and his team, training is given to new colleagues for them better to understand the needs of the plant in terms of water consumption, so we can move towards reducing unnecessary use of irrigators.
Improvement is initiated on fertilizer quality and management of the use of fertilizers so less watering and fertilization is needed.
Management of accidents and emergencies Our calling process is activated directly in the case of fire or accidents implicating visitors or employees on the course or in or near the buildings. The staff discovering or being alarmed in case of an emergency informs the reception and remains at the place of the accident to secure the area and perform first aid if needed until the rescue team from the fire department arrives. A path will be made before the ambulance or fire department arrives straight to the place of the emergency by the starter or director using a cart. If required an emergency helicopter landing zone is made.
Management of habitats and vegetation Trainings are made for some of our employees on the local gardener school. We also would like to explore the possibilities to collaboration with the local association CEN-Paca who has got a staff of 40 specialists within nature and environment preservation. For specific advice we also use our plant expert Jacques Laborier from the company Celtic.
Waste minimization, separation and recycling The municipality of Sainte Baume has installed different waste bins for different waste fractions. Currently it’s garbage, waste paper and cardboard for recycling.
Health & Safety The staff has got a yearly medical occupational examination. All incidents and accidents are registered and investigated to prevent them from occurring again.
Energy Saving The management at the Sainte Baume is aware that showing commitment and management involvement in energy saving initiatives is crucial for making our employees interested in and aware of the importance in saving energy, both in daily routines and by making energy saving investments. We will work structured with initiatives for reducing our energy consumption and support initiatives that promote and provide a more sustainable energy production
Understanding of landscape and cultural heritage We are aware of our cultural heritage, and are taking this serious. We have for example a well preserved ancient Roman road at lane 15 that we are very proud of.
Environmental management planning We are on our way to integrate the environmental management system under the GEO system. Now we have completed the mapping of our environmental impacts which has been done with the assistant of our environmental consultant. The next step will be to follow up on the action plan that has been made.

Community Relations

Neighbours Free initiation lessons are offered to the neighbors to the golf. We allow newlyweds to take their wedding photos on the golf. This is both to show people not being members the beauty of our site and its preservation but it is also an opportunity for our employees to show it to guests not used to being on a golf course.
Media We will use local newspapers and other media to come out to a larger audience and tell of our new sustainable initiatives close to the national park.
Local Businesses Local business partners are used as suppliers to a great extent. We also let local craftsmen and shops promote their services in the clubhouse e.g. bakeries, wine yards, hotels, gas stations etc.
Schools & Colleges Our golf teacher François Micoulet organizes two days of for the schools from Nans les Pins and the nearby town of Saint Zacharie. At these occasions our golf practice is closed for other members leaving up till hundred children in various golf related workshops.

Members evenings and course walks This could very well be a new initiative that we would start up. Members’ evenings could allow for the members to get more ownership of the golf club and better integration of their ideas to improve and make this an even greater golf club.
