Species diversity has been monitored over the years, and several notable species have been spotted. With respect to water issues, Welderen only uses a moderate 10.000 m3 per annum for irrigation purposes. Nature

Welderen golf course was built in 1995 in the river area located between Arnhem and Nijmegen. The golf course plays an important function as a green zone in a largely agricultural and urbanised area. The rich soil structure is cause for a large amount of plant species. Many insects and birds make use of the foraging, nesting and sheltering places. Approximately 70 bird species have been observed during the years, especially the Yellow Wagtail, Black-tailed Godwit, Long-eared Owl, and the Common Cuckoo. Other species are more common types. In 2013, approximately 99 plant species were inventoried. Red list types include the Broad-leaved Helleborine, and the American or Canadian Waterweed. Remarkable is the change in vegetation, during the years more species of pioneer plants have appeared, thus suggesting a slight attenuation of the vegetation. The ponds have been surveyed in 2014, in which species like the spined loach, sunbleak and western tubenose goby have been sighted. Lastly, in 2015 a bat survey was conducted in which the common noctule, common pipistrelle, serotine bat and Daubenton's bat have been sighted. Another notable specie is the European rhinoceros beetle.

Golfbaan Welderen is gelegen in het rivierengebied ingeklemd tussen de Nederrijn en de Waal. De golfbaan heeft in het grotendeels agrarische en verstedelijkte gebied een belangrijke functie als groene zone. Door de rijke bodem is de soortenrijkdom beperkt, maar de plantengroei overvloedig. Veel insecten en vogels maken gebruik van de foerageer-, nest- en schuil mogelijkheden. Er zijn ca. 70 vogelsoorten gedurende de jaren waargenomen met als bijzondere soorten de grutto, kneu en de koekoek. Overige soorten zijn veelal algemene soorten. Tijdens onderzoek in 2013 zijn er ca. 99 plantensoorten waargenomen, met als rode lijstsoort de brede wespenorchis. Opvallend is de verschuiving in soorten van pioniersvegetaties, hetgeen duidt op een verschraling van de vegetatie. Van de vijvers is in 2014 een inventarisatie gedaan, waarbij soorten als kleine modderkruiper, vetje en marmergrondel zijn waargenomen. Tenslotte is in 2015 een vleermuisonderzoek gedaan waarbij de rosse vleermuis, gewone dwergvleermuis, laatvlieger en watervleermuis zijn aangetroffen. Ook komt er neushoornkever op het terrein voor.

Provision of nesting and nectar for pollinators Brushwood, roughs, forest edges and ditches are present at various locations. Special attention has been given to the different types of fauna.
Installation of nest boxes Birdboxes have been placed at different locations on the course for different types of birds, such as falcons, owls and songbirds.

Water

The water areas were created during the construction of the golf course in order to make the course more challenging and appealing. The gained ground was used to create undulations. Water plays an important part in these regions, because of the Rijn and Wall which have shaped the landscape.
A big ditch around the borders of the terrain and the several water elements have a total area of 4 hectares. Through above and underground connections, the different water elements are connected. For the irrigation the club uses a combination of surface and ground water. The pond near the clubhouse is used as a temporary basin for pumped up groundwater, before it is distributed through the golf course. Unique fact is that the water for this irrigation system can be mixed with fertilizers, creating a liquid fertilizer. With this, the nutrients are easy to absorb and the Greenkeepers don’t need to made an extra round of work.

Het oppervlaktewater is grotendeels ontstaan tijdens de aanleg om het terrein interessant te maken en bodem te verwerven voor ophoging van het golfterrein. Water heeft in deze omgeving een belangrijke rol gespeeld in de landschapsbouw vanwege de invloeden van de Rijn en Waal op het rivierengebied.
Een randsloot met verschillende vijvers en poelen beslaan een ca. 4 ha. Middels onder- en bovengrondse verbindingen zijn de waterpartijen met elkaar verbonden. Voor irrigatie van het terrein wordt een mix van oppervlakte- en grondwater gebruikt. In de vijver bij het clubhuis wordt grondwater opgepompt dat van hieruit weer verder wordt verspreidt door de beregeningsinstallatie.
Uniek is dat in deze sproeibeurt bemesting kan worden toegevoegd aan het water. Hierdoor krijgt het gras een vloeibare meststof toegediend die goed wordt opgenomen en dus niet apart hoeft te worden uitgereden.

Energy

Yearly energy usage used to comprises around the 135.000 kWh. Since LED lights were installed in the club house in 2015, the energy usage is visibly reduced, to 100.500 kwh in 2016. It is used by the accommodations, such as the restaurant, locker rooms, the maintenance facility, etc. The energy usage by the different accommodations is not measured separately. Therefore, an exact overview of energy usage is missing although it can be safely stated that the majority can be accounted for by the clubhouse. The accommodations have only been partially reviewed for possible savings. The coming years will see step-by-step changes of existing lighting sources on the driving range.
We have installed a so-called 'ecotap' where visitors can charge their electrical bikes. Medio 2014 we will make this charging point suited for charging electric cars aswell.

Er was een jaarlijks energieverbruik van rond de 135.000 kWh. Doordat in 2015 de verlichting in het clubhuis is vervangen voor LED-verlichting is het verbruik in 2016 merkbaar lager: 100.500 Kwh. Dit verbruik is nodig voor het voorzien van de horeca, kleedruimtes, werkruimte greenkeeping etc. Doordat er per accommodatie geen gescheiden metingen worden gedaan is het moeilijk de exacte onderverdeling te beoordelen, maar vanzelfsprekend gaat overgrote deel van het stroomverbruik op rekening van het clubgebouw. De planning is om in de komende jaren de verlichting van de drivingrange aan te passen.
Er is een 'ecotap' geïnstalleerd waar bezoekers hun elektrische fiets kunnen opladen. Ook is er een oplaadpunt voor het opladen van elektrische auto's.

Supply Chain

When purchasing goods, the club looks at the certificates and quantity of packaging per product. Ideally, the product is either recyclable or compostable. We also purchase at local suppliers as much as possible.
Dangerous and toxic products are stored in safety containers. The personnel is informed about the correct way of working with dangerous waste and products.
De golf club has constructed a deposit for plastic bottles in order to recycle them.
In order to prepare for the Green Deal, the greenkeepers frequently test biological and non-toxic products to replace chemical products. So far, this has not provided a good alternative.
Through the experience of the head greenkeeper, the turfgrass is kept in an optimal health, so that only a minimum of fertilizers and pesticides has to be used. The past years, the use of pesticides and fertilizers has been reduced, only small amounts of herbicides and fungicides are used.

Bij de inkoop van producten wordt rekening gehouden met certificering en de hoeveelheid verpakkingsmateriaal. Wanneer mogelijk is het product te composteren of te hergebruiken. Ook wordt zo veel mogelijk gebruik gemaakt van leveranciers uit de omgeving.
Gevaarlijke stoffen worden op de juiste wijze opgeslagen in beveiligde kasten en het personeel is op de hoogte van de omgang met gevaarlijk afval en gevaarlijke stoffen.
De golfclub heeft een petflesopvang geïnstalleerd zodat plastic flesjes kunnen worden gerecycled.
Om toe te werken naar de Green Deal wordt er regelmatig getest met biologische en niet schadelijke middelen om de chemische te vervangen. Dit heeft nog niet geleid tot een goed alternatief.
Door de ervaring van de hoofdgreenkeeper wordt de grasmat in een optimale gezondheid gehouden zodat er zo min mogelijk chemische middelen hoeven te worden gebruikt. Dit is de laatste jaren ook flink afgenomen, er wordt alleen nog een beetje herbicide en fungicide gebruikt.

Pollution Control

Dangerous products that are used for course management are kept to a minimum. Also, the quantity is kept low at all time, in order to prevent environmental harm. Run off of fertilizers is almost fully prevented, by choosing the right amounts and weather type when applying.
In order to keep an eye on the water quality, we monitor and analyse the quality of the surface water once a year.

De gevaarlijke stoffen die nodig zijn voor het onderhoud worden tot een minimum beperkt. Bovendien wordt er gewerkt met kleine voorraden zodat de milieurisico’s relatief laag zijn. Door een goede afstemming van de bemesting op de vitaliteit van het gras en het gebruik alleen toe te passen bij optimale weersomstandigheden wordt uitspoeling zoveel mogelijk voorkomen. Om te controleren of er inderdaad geen verslechtering van de oppervlaktewater kwaliteit plaatsvindt wordt deze jaarlijks gecontroleerd en geanalyseerd.

Community

Golfbaan Welderen has a great deal of employees and values the current way of working. The level of involvement of these people guarantees a steady business management. The greenkeepers can improve their knowledge by taking part in a course of their liking. We also employ young disabled persons. These youngsters gain practical experience by taking part in the greenkeeper’s daily work. They are coached by the head greenkeeper and external personal guidance.
The golf course communicates to its members and others about the natural values on the course. The golf course and the greenkeepers have been announced to be ‘Champions of the Green’ in 2015 by the CMAE, for their excellent work in protecting and strengthening the natural values on the golf course.

Golfbaan Welderen heeft veel personeel in dienst en hecht waarde aan deze manier van werken. De betrokkenheid van de mensen bij dit bedrijf zorgt voor een goede en constante bedrijfsvoering. De greenkeeping krijgt de mogelijkheid de kennis te verbreden door bijscholing. Daarnaast maken ook Wajongers deel uit van het team. Deze jongeren met een leerbeperking leren op Welderen in de praktijk het greenkeepersvak en worden gecoacht door de hoofdgreenkeeper en externe begeleiding.
De golfbaan communiceerd veel naar leden en naar buiten toe over de natuurwaarden op de golfbaan. De golfbaan en het greenkeepersteam zijn in december 2015 uitgeroepen tot ‘Champions of the Green’ door de CMAE voor het uitstekende werk in het beschermen en versterken van de natuurwaarden op de golfbaan.
