Nature

The Lochemse golf course is located in the ‘Achterhoek’, west of the village of Lochem, in a rich woodland area. The course was designed by golf course architectural firm Eschauzier & Thate. The first nine holes were completed in 1993 and the second nine holes in 1995. Typical of the landscape found in the Achterhoek are the lanes, woods, natural wood hedges and water elements. The terrain counts a surface area of 74 hectares and is known as a woodland golf course. A part of the course is located in the original forest prior to its construction and another part is situated in newly planted forest. Approximately 44 hectares is comprised of nature elements and are maintained accordingly. The nature management plan further outlines the nature conservation approach. About 56 bird species have been observed on the course, mainly existing of breeding birds. Western roe deer and squirrels are spotted often and the water elements attract many green frogs, dragonflies and other insects. The most important nature elements partially specific to the Lochemse golf course are its woodland, the natural wood hedges, border vegetation, heath vegetation and the groups of solitary trees. Increasingly, more attention is being given to the development of heath on the golf course.

Water

The surface water on the golf course is multifunctional. It acts as a water hazard, gives shape to the landscape and forms a habitat for plants and animals. The goal is to obtain and maintain good water quality which is of utmost importance in creating a multitude of rich living environments. Subsequently a minimum amount of chemical substances are used and only the playing elements are irrigated. The composition of the different types of grassland and expert advice on irrigation under specific circumstances results in a minimum of waste. Groundwater is used for irrigation and is of good quality.

Energy

The Lochemse has made various adjustments in the area of energy and fuel usage during the past years. Motion sensors and energy-saving lighting has been installed. The insulation of the clubhouse was optimised during a large scale renovation in 2002. Recently an energy scan was conducted by Nuon. This has led to recommendations in reducing gas- and electricity usage. Green energy is being used a couple of years now to reduce the effects of energy on the environment.

Supply Chain

Usage of pesticides and fertilisers is minimal as a general rule. Maintenance is carried out in a professional manner by identifying and treating diseases, insects and weed problems at an early stage. This identification takes place through visual checks and by taking water- and soil samples. Chemical substances are stored safely and separately in specific lockable cabinets. Other substances needed by the golf course, the restaurant and office are re-used as much as possible in order to minimise waste. Purchasing for the restaurant is done through local suppliers which is both practical and creates a broader general involvement.

Pollution Control

Existing environmental legislation is seen as the minimum quality in carrying out management and maintenance. The workshop and restaurant fully meet current norms which is a good starting point. Grease- and oil separators have been installed where necessary to decrease the effect on the environment. More attention is being given to biodegradable oils and greases. There are easier to work with for the staff and is less taxing on the environment. The use of pesticides and other chemical substances is minimal.
