The site is within a natural desert landscape but within a metropolis of high rise buildings that have encroached over the years. The core product has not changed much over the years, however it has evolved into a more "parkland" type course through maturing of trees. Native shrubs are prevalent particularly in the larger unmaintained desert areas. The new irrigation system has allowed the natural terrain to return to the more low lying type with less contamination of other invasive species of plants.

We use Treated Sewerage Effluent water at Emirates Golf Club over the entire property to irrigate the golf course and common landscaping areas. When effluent water became available, we changed over the species of turf on our second 18-hole course to Paspalum. In 2012 we made a significant investment in a new irrigation system primarily for efficiency of water distribution. This included a state of the art pump station. We have reduced the annual water consumption by 34%. We use the latest Toro Lynx software and water our site based on ET from our weather station.
All other club areas use potable/desal water provided by Dubai Electricity and Water Authority.

This golf facility is undertaking the following activities to maximize irrigation efficiency:
|Selection of grass species||Selected Paspalum for the Faldo Golf Course during the re-design specifically knowing that we were using TSE water source.|
|Soil decompaction and thatch management||We have an aggressive hollow coring program in place. We aerate all surfaces a minimum of 3 times a year. Regular needle tining and verticutting of all surfaces is standard. We also Drill and Fill our greens three times a year as standard. They are push up greens on the Majlis.|

Emirates Golf Club currently has no major initiatives in terms of energy usage or renewable energy usage, hence us going through this process to improve in all areas. The majority of our fleet vehicles are electric. In our GCM department we are in the process of looking at our oil in particular and changing to biodegradable sources. We have recently purchased 11 new Hybrid greens mowers.

|Encouraging drought and disease tolerant grasses||Our courses are planted with warm season grasses that are able to withstand the hard summer climates we experience. The Faldo in particular has Paspalum which is known to be environmentally sound and able to withstand the poorer water quality we use in terms of the TSE. The Majlis uses bermuda which is very drought resistant and suited to our environment.|
|Managing stress and wear||The investment into our new irrigation system has helped us manage the water input and thus stress on the plant. We make efficient use of wetting agents to assist us in our stress management throughout the year.|

Historically the course was built for the sole purpose of driving tourism to Dubai. The model then was not real estate driven and to date, we remain the only facility that is not reliant on real estate or part of a golf and real estate development. In fact, communities were developed around the golf course because of the beautiful landscape it offers and we now find ourselves in the middle of a multitude of gated communities, as a stand along self sufficient entity.
The course has created opportunities for these communities by providing a facility for young people to come and learn the game of golf and experience the golf courses we have to offer.
We will be installing a new irrigation system in 2012. By a mandated policy to use local contractors, product and expertise, we will be creating an opportunity for the local community to be involved with this project from start to finish. The clear message being sent is our investment to improving our use of the worlds most natural resource and our desire to minimize the impact on our environment.
Communication to our members and guests is proactive but we are not good enough at telling them all the good we are doing from a sustainability point of view. This needs to, and will change.
