Nature

Golf Sarfvik is located on the southern coast of Finland and lies between the lake Finnträsk and the Gulf of Finland. The course area is 167 hectares in size and is built partly on old farmland of the Sarfvik manor and partly on slightly hilly and rocky pine forest. The course area has varied nature, ranging from rocky hills to swampy areas and various groves. The course is partly bordered by the Finnträsk-lake and the sea is very close to the eastern parts of the course. Fourteen artificial ponds have been constructed too.

Vegetation varies from the vegetation typical to moors that can be found in the rocky hills to mixed forests and groves, trees from pines to maples and oaks can be found within the course area. The fauna of the course are is varied to the location of the course area. The varied forest and old farmland and their location in close proximity to the sea provide habitats for many different animals such as mooses, hares, squirrels, foxes and badgers. Seasonally there are also a variety of migrating birds and occasionally visited by white-tailed deers. There are also some protected areas intended for the preservation of some notable species such as for example the Siberian Flying Squirrel. In the sea, right beside the course, lives a rare beetle, Macroplea pubipennis.

Lisäksi kenttäalueelle on rakennettu neljätoista tekolampea.

Kasvillisuus alueella vaihtelee kivisen kangasmaaston jäkälistä ja puolukoista aina vaahteran ja tammen kaltaisiin jaloihin lehtipuihin. Kentän eläimistö on vastaavasti monipuolista ja kenttäalueella viihtyvätkin muun muassa hirvet, jänikset, oravat ja ketut. Kenttä sijaitsee lintujen muuttoreitin varrella, joten lintujen muuttoaikoina kenttäalueella voi havaita paljon erilaisia muuttolintuja. Meressä, kentän välittömässä läheisyydessä elää harvinainen meriuposkuoriainen.(Macroplea pubipennis)

These turfgrasses are optimal for the circumstances at this club because:
Golf Sarfvik prefers perennial grasses as they provide greater resistance to diseases and generally require less fertilization and irrigation than annual grasses such as for example Poa Annua. Golf Sarfvik therefore has not consciously planted any Poa annua, but it has spread naturally around the course area.

This golf facility assesses mowing patterns every: 1 years

This golf facility does not consult individuals or organizations regarding its grassing plan.

This golf facility is making the following efforts to manage the playing quality expectations of customers:

Activity Description
Establishing clear internal policies for irrigation, fertilization, colour, cutting heights, overseeding etc Irrigation is made in nighttime, thus avoiding disturbance to the players. All maintenance that disturbs the customers is made in early mornings. The color of the playing area is kept green, but not by using nitrogene. The mowing heights have been lowered during the history of the course. The heights are adjusted according to the players´expectations. Overseeding is made yearly, if needed on some areas. Overseeding the greens yearly with perennial grasses, also Agrostis canina in the past years.
Promoting the playing quality values of more naturalized turf, particularly fairways and semi-rough Meadows and high roughs are kept on the course to add challenge to the game and add local biodiversity.
Improving customer understanding around greens maintenance Articles on maintenance are published in the club magazine. The importance of the maintenance tasks are explained on the netpage.

Water

Golf Sarfvik uses municipal water main in the clubhouse and other fixed facilities within the course area. Water for irrigation is drawn mainly from the nearby lake Finnträsk. During hot and dry summers when more water is needed for irrigation than can be drawn from the lake, water for irrigation is drawn from a municipal water main. Also rainwater is used for irrigation when possible. Rainwater from the course area flows into the artificial ponds in the course area and water for irrigation can be drawn from these to a certain extent.

Waste water from the clubhouse and maintenance facility go to municipal sewer system. Course wc waste water guided into a septic tank that is periodically emptied by a tank truck that transports the waste water into a community waste water treatment facility. Rain- and subsurface draining water from the course area flows partially into the artificial ponds within the course area and partially away from the course area and eventually into the Gulf of Finland.

Supply Chain

Golf Sarfvik aims to conduct all turf inputs in a responsible way. This starts already at the stage when turfgrass species are selected. In the selection process Golf Sarfvik prefers species that in addition to being suitable for the Finnish climate do not require much irrigation and do not need massive turf inputs. Golf Sarfvik also follows a carefully laid plan on fertilizer use in order to minimize yearly fertilization.

Golf Sarfvik scouts extensively for diseaces and weeds and does not apply any pesticides until a pest infected area is detected. In that case Golf Sarfvik sprays only a pesticide that is targeted to the particular diseace or weed that was detected. In order to minimize the usage of chemical pesticides, Golf Sarfvik conducts non-chemical weed control in bunkers.

Golf Sarfvik also promotes the separation and recycling of waste and for this end has installed small recycling centre where bottles and cans can be separated from other waste around the course area. Cardboard and energy waste is compressed, so the need for transportation is considerably less: one time per year.
